Aye, first day I picked that book up... it was finished 3 days later. I couldn't put it down.

I'm sure once I get into the actual book, it will be fabulous. I haven't stopped reading it for lack of interest, but lack of time. :(

I finished reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy a few days ago. Of the three things I've read by him, probably his overall greatest and most rich book. It explores a lot of the same themes that he touches upon for, say, No Country for Old Men, but to a far more satisfying and interesting degree.

Almost done reading John Updike's Rabbit, Run. While I'm certainly not gah-gah over it, this man's prose is one of the best I've ever read. Writing and narration that reads so goddamn well, and nothing as far as situations or incredible characterization is beyond his grasp.

Mieville is hands down my favourite author, in particular his books set in the world of Bas-lag (Perdido Street Station and The Scar) although King Rat is a good book also. Building atmosphere is his strong point, he has a brilliant imagination and captures it in beautful densely written imagery. Although sometimes he can be a bit confrontational to read, he doesn't shy away from depicting some pretty ugly scenes.
Solid characterisation and plots that alway give you that 'wow this is ****ing bat**** awsome' feeling that I love in fantasy.
My only real fault with him is that his endings sometimes feel a little undercooked, and on rare occasions I get the feeling that he is trying a little too hard to be unpredictable and creative.

Gaiman is also good, stylistically he has a much lighter tone than Mieville and his prose is a more clear and straightforward. I'd start with American Gods and Anansi Boys.

read a couple of the Neil Gaiman Sandman books. I like his concepts.

I want to get into graphic novels, but no one sells them around here :(

Molecules 09-30-2008 12:05 AM

^^^Amazon is chock full of 'em. I only got into comics/graphic novels recently, I bought every issue of 2000 AD for like a year when I was younger... the big mistake alot of people make is thinking that comics = Marvel, DC and Superheroes... so wrong
