A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole So funny it hurts. The Mathematical Theory of Communication by C.E. Shannon Made me feel real smart like. The beginning is really intense. Quote:
I've been reading some T.S. Eliot lately as well.

Didn't like it at all. There were short glimpses of creepy atmosphere here and there but overall it was messy, at times too rushed, at times too boring and the plot just kept stumbling over the fussy language. Didn't like it as horror and didn't like it as the psychological thriller some see in it. Just not a particularly good book.

ooh Henry James is one of the oldies I'm planning on reading for the first time soon, rumours about the fussy language are actually the reason why I haven't read him yet. I'm curious if I'll feel the same about him. I'll probably start with What Maisie Knew though so it may depend on the particular book

Still, this whole schtick can be fine when it's just one or two smug quotes you read somewhere. But at a higher density it gets a bit tedious and often quite noticeable that it isn't as clever as it wants to be. I have this issue with a lot of humorous literature though, for example the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy series.
