I called my mom "Mum" until my adult sisters made the switch to "Mother" at which point I became self-conscious about what I was saying, and pretty much avoided calling her anything. (so not something I am particularly proud of.) Quote:
For decades, I too used to choose books on a pretty logical, follow-up-on-that-topic, basis, but now this is my usual selection technique: go to the one place in my city that has second-hand English-language books and buy something that I consider to be remotely readable by my standards. This method turns up a real scattershot of random material, and although I haven't come across The Last of The Mohicans, I entirely approve, and a while ago found and finished Little Women, which is kind of similar league I guess - though weed gets no mention. And, yes, Mindfulness, Eno is a legend, mainly for being a pioneer of ambient music. He reached that exhaulted status after starting out with Roxy Music and then making a couple of nice poppy/rock solo albums. Here's a tongue-in-cheek track from before his serious commitment to ambient:- ^ "I never got a letter back"

When I get my hands on a new book it's usually either a copy recommended to me and passed on by a friend or a thrift store find. This weekend I found this, which I selected entirely based on title + cover:
What's more, there's an inscription from the author! Any guesses on what this book might be about? |

That might be worth a little something Wolf
Derrick Parker Notorious C.O.P.: The Inside Story of the Tupac, Biggie, and Jam Master Jay Investigations from NYPD's First "Hip-Hop Cop" This has the shortcomings you’d probably expect: self-promoting, slightly disjointed, unnecessarily repetitive... but it does have some interesting inside information on how the police (especially NYPD) investigated hip hop celebrities. Also, as a fan, the author has very solid understanding of hip hop and why certain artists are iconic. He has good taste.

I've been reading The Terror by Dan Simmons and enjoying it. About some dudes in the 1800's that go on an expedition to find the Northwest Passage and their boats get trapped in ice. The expedition actually happened and everybody died, but Dan Simmons puts a bit of horror monster influence in their which I appreciate. The novel is bleak as **** and I'm glad I'm reading it during the winter because the descriptions of cold are just profound and I can physically feel it. The book got turned into a series on AMC that I plan to watch after finishing, I've heard it's great.

Cosmic Trigger I: The Final Secret of the Illuminati by Robert Anton Wilson Took me a while since I read it piecemeal I’d say a lot of counterculture mythology started here.
