One of my favourites. Curious how you can really love a book while reading it hurts

It is indeed

When I first read it I didn’t realize it’s part of a huge cycle of books

a few years back I read The Fortune of the Rougons with the intention of trying to make my way through the entire Les Rougon-Macquart

it’s a real lot to read though and I think I had a hard time finding book two in English obviously at a reasonable price

but yeah Germinal runs at a great clip and had a big influence on my thinking in my early twenties when I read it (I think I was 19 or 20 actually)

Is Goodreads good for anything? I swear there is no such thing as a bad book by their rating system. Every single book is rated somewhere from 3.8 to 4.3. You just can't trust it.

People usually don’t feel inclined to comment on **** they found mediocre

And no of course you can’t trust it

Professional critics still review books.

I look for the NYTimes review every time

It’s not an automatic deal breaker but it carries weight

Just read the bad reviews.. Also, explore book review channels on YT aka BookTube. I've been enjoying them a lot lately. That's how I discovered the Mistborn trilogy im currently reading.

The Master and Margarita – again and again and again. The greatest book.
