I just googled it, I was thinking that it was comedian David Mitchell, not author David Mitchell who is apparently a different person.

Terry Pratchett: The Colour of Magic (1983)
Used the read bits and pieces of the Discworld series when I was a kid. Particularly Soul Music, Interesting Times & Carpe Jugulum. Absolutely loved them and wanted to start the whole series from the beginning for ages. Now's a better time than any I guess.

That THE Alan Moore, of Watchmen fame?
Les Miserables is a great great book, but god can Hugo turn off the reader sometimes with long, rambling accounts of the history of the Battle of Waterloo and the way convents are set up. I have paged through something like twenty chapters and it hasn't impacted, so far as I can see, on the main storyline at all, so why the hell did he do it? Also, **** trying to pronounce all these French names and double **** all the Latin phrases he uses. Great story though: I'm glad I never saw the musical or the film so this is all totally new to me.
