RYM has a fairly comprehensive summary of the genre. They include a release chronology beginning in 1990 with the Voice of Thousands compilation and chart 4,232 albums of the genre along with user-submitted reviews for each.

I also recommend reviewing their Top List for metalcore, which currently has Converge's Jane Doe (2001) holding the #1 spot, though you can customize the date range to focus exclusively on pre-2000 releases.

I am indeed well-acquainted with this resource. I am more interested in a historic exploration of the genre. You should check out this genre if you haven't already and have any ability to appreciate aggressive music. There are infinitely better examples of the genre than Killswitch Engage...

You're right that there is a lack of literature on the subject. Metalsucks.com gives a brief summary of its evolution but offers nothing you won't already know. There is a 96pp print-on-demand book titled, Metalcore by Frederic P. Miller from VDM Publishing - ISBN 9786130271169, but I was unable to find an official website supporting the text or validating it as a worthwhile purchase.

I'll have to give it a gander. Beggars can't be choosers.

Valis by philip k dick.

Funny, sophisticated gonzo writing years before hunter s.thompson appeared on the scene. Also generally insane. Philip K dick loved to take care and be abused by really sick women just because he didn't want to be alone. He takes in a fiance with cancer who constantly boasts about screwing other men and stuff, also a lot of great history--especially james pike. That motherf-er was crazy

Hey Prisoner (and everyone else), where should I start with Philip K. Dick?

Probably The Man in the High Castle or Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (source material for Blade Runner).

Do you want first person psychosis told through philip's imaginary third person friend or just sci-fi narrative?

I'd say read valis it's pretty entertaining.
