I just finished that a couple of days ago. I do agree it is highly overrated, but it is still a great book. I really like how Holden calls everyone else a phony yet he is just as phony himself. Not to mention J.D. Salinger is a hermit and watches over the publishers shoulder to see when his next pay check will be.

Anyways I am now reading Moby Dick and I am going to read Paradise Lost after I finish it.

I can see where you would think that, cause there are definitely better books out there. But I wouldn't discredit it just because there are huge fanatics out there.

I'm not doubting it's value as a work, I'm merely saying that I was mislead as to how good it would be.
I definately see some of myself in Holden, especially the qualities that exemplify a general disdain for all mankind.

almost everybody sees themselves in Holden. In my English class this year we did an exercise in which everybody wrote down what character out of school required literature we most related to. 95% of the class put down Holden. It was ridiculous.

We have to read Catcher, and write a psychoanalytical report about him, with full diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment recommendations.

I think the only treatment Holden needed was medicine for hypocrisy and immaturity. Other then that he was perfectly fine.

I'm reading Kite Runner after some friends recommend it, and so far, it's terribly depressing.

Finished "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" by Haruki Murakami. It finished with some loose ends, and as a whole was relatively fragmented. I liked it though; I'd say it's one of my favourite books.

Looking to read some other of his books.

Interview with a Vampire. I enjoyed the movie and heard the book was better.

cardboard adolescent 11-09-2007 12:48 PM

The next two books were better, though I'm not a big Anne Rice fan anymore.

Kevorkian Logic 11-09-2007 02:56 PM

I remember seeing the next two along with the Tale of the Body Thief, I guess I will give them all a shot if I like Interview w/ a Vampire. Out of curiosity did you just grow out of Anne Rice? Or did she pull a Mel Gibson and therefore you don't like her anymore.

cardboard adolescent 11-09-2007 03:39 PM

Grew out, I guess.

Oh dear. I thought we were on the same wave length? The book is airport reading and the film is terrible hollywood fluff.

Reading Kerouac's 5OTH anniversary edition of On The Road. Have to say I prefer the "normal" version.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 11-09-2007 10:31 PM

^ Reading a book of haikus by Jack Kerouac for my writing course.

Pretty interesting stuff - not too fond of the haiku format at first, but when you read them continously it doesn't flow so bad.
