Lords of Chaos
First of all, it is physically impossible to find a good picture of this book. Now, I'd heard great things about this book, and being somewhat of a fan of heavy metal, I figured it was about time I read it. Holy ****. I knew the Norwegian black metal scene was screwed up, but Jesus ****ing Christ. I'm sure there must be some halfway decent people among them, but the ratio of quite possibly psychotic D-bags to hopefully nonpsychotic D-bags is depressingly low. I am perfectly fine with never meeting any of these whackadoos in real life. Whatever the case, this is a fascinating book that had me up till three in the morning the other day. The various crimes perpetrated by the scene is just riveting stuff. And then the book takes a look into Varg's Asatru/nazi beliefs, the parallels between viking culture and the black metal scene, various forms of Satanism in the scene, be it silly, posing, or legitimate LaVeyan satanism. I'm somewhere just past that, and I am totally hooked. Though it's kinda weird reading a book where Vark Vikerness is in a lot of ways, not so much the anti-hero, but the main character at least.

The Book of Illusions by Paul Auster It took me forever to finish this for some reason but it was a really great book. A story about a man who loses his entire family in a plane crash, writes a book about silent film star who vanished in the late 1920s and is eventually contacted by said silent film star's wife, this book somehow manages to nest stories inside of stories, to outline the plots of amazing non-existent silent films, to engage in obscure French literary analysis, to highlight forgotten bits of history, to tell several emotionally gripping stories all at once, and somehow make it all work together. Highly, highly recommended. John Dies at the End by David Wong Reading this because I recently watched the movie based on it and was very intrigued. It's a creepy, tongue-in-cheek story about a black, furry injectable drug called "soy sauce" that gives users the ability to see things no one else can see and do things no one else can do. Also, supernatural trans-dimensional beings, alternate timelines, trashy semi-urban rustbelt life, parties, horrible bands, paranoia and one of the best titles ever. Liking it a lot so far. |
