Magician: Apprentice - Raymond E. Feist

I grabbed an epub version of this off a torrent around the beginning of the year but the formatting was pretty terrible (beggars can't be choosers I know) so I never got around to reading it. I ended up finding a copy in a used bookstore on Saturday so I decided to pick it up and start what would hopefully be a new serious fantasy adventure thing to tide me over before I finally get serious about the Wheel of Time books. So far I'm enjoying it, I just started reading it on the bus this morning but I managed to get through the first two chapters and this has some real potential.

I've noticed this series quite often in bookstores here, what's the premise of it? and how does it compare so far with other fantasy series?

See, when you say things like that and put a smiley after it, all I can do is picture you sitting there, typing with a menacing grin on your face. Like you've already read too many of his books...haha.

From what I've gathered so far (and from reading the general plot summary on the back of the book), the book is about an orphan boy who becomes an apprentice to a magician, and in his studies he accidentally opens a rift to another world and strange monsters start invading.

So it's basically Half-Life but in a fantasy setting.
