Default "I Want My MTV" - must-read for fans of 80's pop, rock, etc.

Another member mentioned "I Want My MTV" somewhere in a thread, I bought it almost immediately, and I enjoyed it immensely. It's very long, but very good. If you liked MTV in its music video days, read the book.

Have seen this book at some local bookshop and thought about picking it up. Maybe I will finally get off my duff and go out and get it now!

Hey could you give like just one or two high-lights of the book, without liek ruining it or anything? That would be cool.

Awesome, no need for a synopsis or little editorial opinion piece on the book... just hook me up with a store link. Thanks.

You talking about I Want My MTV?

Some things stand out in my mind...
Stevie Nicks being a huge music video fan.
Tom Petty describing how the "Every Breathe You Take" video ripped off the video for "A Woman in Love."
Drugs meant for Mister Mister being sent to an MTV executive's hotel room by accident.

I'm dying to read The Acid House by Irvine Welsh, it's a collection of short stories.

Has anyone read it and thinks it's a good read? I love trainspotting but I haven't read any other of Welsh's novels to know what it should be like!

It's the closest thing to Trainspotting that Irvine Welsh has ever written, mostly due to the fact that both books came out and or were written around the same time. It's half short stories with a novella tacked on towards the end that features a cameo of Spud. The novella is really where the book shines, but there are some pretty good short stories in it, "Eurotrash" and "the Granton Star Cause" being my two favourites. That said though, don't expect it to be the exact same as Trainspotting as a few of the stories are pretty out there like "The Acid House" and "Snowman Building Parts for Rico the Squirrel".

I would also recommend the sequel to Trainspotting, called Porno for your next book. It incorporates some characters from a previous Welsh book, but you don't really need to read that one to understand what's going on. Apparently there's a prequel to Trainspotting coming out sometime this year called Skag Boys that explains why most of the main characters turned to drugs and gives a lot of context to their lives, which I'm actually looking forward to. I haven't been too keen on a lot of Welsh's work since '98, but I'm hoping this one is a real return to form for him.

Thanks Pete, if it's written similarly then that's enough for me. It was a friend who recommended it to me, I'm pretty much convinced to buy it now cheers!

I've also been meaning to read Porno but it's murder trying to find it without buying it online (which is a graft!). Skag Boys sounds excellent, it would be interesting to find out why they turned to drugs and Begbie never, if he's in it that is .
