I read it on my version on my iPad with iBooks and the copy I grabbed has empty pages between each chapter and then usually the last 100 or so pages are dedicated to explaining the various houses of the land to give the reader some more info. There's also the maps at the beginning of the book, so in total it probably comes up to 1450 or so. The only reason I can think for the publisher splitting the book in two is to make more money, or they were afraid that fans of the fantasy genre would be turned off by large novels, which leads me to believe the publishers are complete idiots.

I have a little stack classics I got out of the library recently which I'm trying to work my way through before they're due back. After Torilla Flat the remaining books are Gulliver's Travels, Dracula and Treasure Island. I'm debating which to read first. |

High hopes for this, because Colin Meloy. I already know I love his verbose storytelling, so hopefully it translates smoothly into a series. And just finished: Which was a great deal of fun. A lot of deus ex machina in the plot, but so does every fantasy series suffer from it. |

As for me, I just finished the Hunger Games series. I liked it enough and found it to be pretty engaging but I can tell Suzanne Collins is an Atwood reader, because a lot of the elements of the books reminded me of Oryx and Crake and The Handmaid's Tale. The ending was a little anticlimactic, but I did enjoy that the main character, Katniss, was realistic and not overdone in badassery or "femininity" but had a good mix of both. I approve of girls (well all kids even) reading these over Twilight, definitely. On to this next: |
