I really enjoyed this. Sitting down and reading any full work of any author in Late Antiquity can make you want to blow your brains out, but this one feeds you in small yet still relevant doses. The chosen sources are from a very broad selection, and it covers everything from around Diocletian to the Muslim Conquest. There is commentary on each individual source as well. The best thing about it is the way it's set up though. It's divided into topics (such as administration, Roman army, Christianity, etc.) rather than putting it into chronological order and it's further divided into different subtopics (to compare with the above examples: Imperial administration, recruitment, asceticism, etc.). It essentially provides you with a few examples of everything you could ever want to know about this time period. |

I've recently picked up a rather thorough book on Dadaism off amazon recently. I didn't know how massive it was, especially for 20 bucks, but so far it's a pretty interesting read filled with large photographs off important (and more obscure) pieces of art created by artists in the Dada movement. It feels a little silly though, reading a "picture book". |
"Gallilee" by Clive Barker
Only really started it, but seems pretty good |

Eh, it's popcorn literature but I didn't have many options when looking this time around. Not bad for a mindless read with some of the most amusingly insulting descriptions "the normal human being has about 3 six packs worth of blood". Amazing. |
I just finished 'John Dies @ The End' by David Wong. He's the editor-in-chief at Cracked.com. Don't let that deter you or think that this novel is just a bunch of fluff. The book is described as 'the author's attempt to present soul-sucking lunacy and succeeding with flying colours'. I agree. It was fantastic.
I'm taking a little reading break in the meantime. Going to tackle David Foster Wallace's 'The Infinite Jest' in the new year. I think I need to psyche myself up for this one, I've never managed a 1000+ page book before. |

One thing that you must do is keep two bookmarks in it - one on the main body and one in the endnotes. And you have to read the endnotes, they're not just notes but actually a significant part of the story. Do not ignore them even if they go on for many pages. I still need to finish the thing myself. I got stuck on page 728 nearly a year ago when other things started distracting me too much and I need to get back to it. I'd love to have an MB discussion/thread on it if anybody else has read or is reading this. So .. read it! And let us know how it goes for you. |
