I have his first book, but I haven't read that much of it. How good is the series?

I'm about to start reading it, rather. I read all of his books when they're out, as my mother gets all of them. Haven't picked this one up yet, but she says it's pretty good. We shall see.

That's the second book of the series, so I haven't gotten that far in, but I loved every second of it so far. Fantastic writing. 800 pages goes by in a breeze.

I don't know if I'd really call it parallel universes. It's more like Steven King came up with a bunch of characters and ideas to build a story out of and wound up thinking of two different stories to tell that he couldn't decide between so he published both. The details are mostly the same but presented in totally different ways so that they tell two completely different stories. It's hard to explain, but it's very interesting to read the two of them back to back.

RE: The Stephen King Regulators and Desperation discussion:
If you read the Dark Tower series, it will all make sense. You'll realize that many, many, many more of his novels are "companion novels" than just those two.
