I just finished The Great Gatsby last night. Why do good books always have to have such depressing endings?

Now I'm starting Stephen Colbert's book, which my sister got me for Christmas.

i believe its called "everythings eventual" by stephen king
it says "1408" on it so at first i thought thats what it was
turns out its just a book of a bunch of short stories that include "1408"
