Oh, I am too. It's just it can be well written rather than mind-numbingly bland, relying on it's underlying theme and it's "controversy" to carry the readers interest. Try reading V for Vendetta, which has both "humans staying human", the father-state and lengthy political discourse without the ennui and pretence.

A Scanner Darkly by Phillip K. Dick, my second Dick book, and so far much better then the book Blade Runner was based off of.

Not that I've read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (it's on my list), but if that was in any way a slight against Bladerunner I will hunt you.

yeah, I still have some issues if people speak it really fast to me, but I can read it fairly fluently.

In my "free time" ill be plowing my way through crime and punishment. *sigh* i miss the days when i actually had time to read for pleasure. (says the girl who spent her entire day on MusicBanter rather than doing her calc homework. ah hypocrisy).

I also just finished 1984 (also for AP lit) and Steinbacks Of Mice and Men. Steinback has such a twisted sense of plot...i would have loved to have met him. Both books were incredibly depressing and completely void of hope...perhaps thats why i've been in such a ****ty mood lately. oh well, life will go on.
I read both Dracula and Of Mice and Men back in high school.

Dracula was quite a good read, especially after having been enthralled with the film in my childhood.

I still occasionally quote Of Mice and Men nowadays. There are some strong themes going on there; loneliness, hope, dreams etc. And of course the touchy topic of euthanasia crops up.

I was never a huge of fan of Dracula, but Frankenstein (Mary Shelley's one of course, only hers) is quite possibly my favourite book of all time. Just the themes it raises and the things it makes you feel... I could talk about it for an eternity. Plus she wrote it when she was like 18 or something crazy like that. Amazing.

Nineteen Eighty-Four also made me depressed, but although I'm not an Orwell fan I loved how it was so advanced for its time (I think, anyway). Quite thought-provoking and again, issue-raising.

I actually really enjoyed 1984. I guess I'm a big fan of the whole "humans staying human" concept...and doublethink just blew my mind. A lot of my classmates totally skimmed the whole "the book" sections (supposedly written by the goldstein guy) but honestly, those were some of my favorite parts. I also enjoyed the psycology of the torture towards the end. I've never endured any kind of intense physical (or emotional really) pain, so it is just a totally foriegn idea to me.

And, a big tsk tsk on my sophmore english teacher, I've never read lord of the flies even though its required reading. It was checked out when i tryed to read it on my own time. Whats so bad about it?
i read of mice & men at school last year, it was at school i read lord of the flies. i liked both. both are very twisted.

I started reading Fight Club a few days ago. I have seen the movie a few times but it's been long enough that it's not ruining my enjoyment of the book. I'm liking it, and can't wait to watch the movie again afterwards. I'm also planning to read some of Chuck Palahniuk's other novels later on.
