I thought it was going to be a struggle but it's actually fairly gripping.

What's that book about?

Fruitonica 05-17-2009 09:39 AM

Well, I'm actually not that far in, so any number of wild twists could ensue from this point.

It centres on three Russian brothers and their absurdly vile father, who is later murdered by one of them, I'm speculating for inheritance. Probably the strongest theme running through it is the nature of faith, sparked by the different religious views of the brothers.

That was a piss poor summary but I can't do much better at this point.

It's Dostoevsky man, a full summary is going to require a few pages at least.

awesome wordsmith. it is unusual to see Soviet-era Russians writing completely western stories.

Gotta say, the Captain's Doll is basically short fiction by the numbers - stellar piece of writing that.

It's easier to be succinct when you're only summarising the first couple of chapters, haha.

And I'm not going to start this until I got through Karamazov, but I had to spend a birthday book voucher before it expired so I took a chance on..

For some reason Russian prose translates very beautifully into English. Despite its subject matter, Lolita is a wonderfully well written book and a great read.

One of the best books I've read. His knowledge and use of English puts many an English writer to shame.
