Great collection. My favorite story would have to be "All The King's Horses"

Finished not long ago - His dark materials - Phillip Pullman. Best fantasy I've read in a while. Everyone should read it, it's astonishing.

Currently finishing - Atomised - Michel Houellebecq - an incredibly bleak portrait of the modern materialistic world, full of depression, nihilism and sexual frustration. Didn't particularly enjoy it...

Clamz 07-03-2008 02:21 AM

Am currently reading Snow by Orhan Pamuk, and just got done reading My Name is Red by the same author. Both quite interesting.

Yup...I'm not really an avid reader so there are plenty of classics I haven't managed to read yet.

Son of JayJamJah 07-03-2008 04:11 PM

It's a great read, a try to get to it once every couple years. Just read it last summer.

I was going to read this a few years back, but then my school librarian told me not to because I'd just be bored by it! :p:

Right now it's Netherland by Joseph O'Neill, which is absolutely spectacular. Definitely deserves all the praise it's been getting! It's also encouraged me to go re-read The Great Gatsby, which I'll pick up when I'm done.

TheBig3 07-03-2008 09:25 PM

Melville isn't for those who don't like reading I'd think. I've never read Moby but I read two of his other works and the writing is archaic. Beautiful but arcane to be sure.

How'd you like is Adidasss?

lucifer_sam 07-07-2008 12:14 PM

some dreck i read now... Frederick Forsyth's The Devil's Alternative

best book i read this year... Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory

Your school librarian should be fired. Also she is either not very smart or a liar. It's impossible to be bored by Moby ****, not like it fine, but it's anything but boring.

Very valid criticism.

She was fired, actually. Not for her book recommendations, though.

And I don't really see how "Melville isn't for those who don't like reading" is a valid criticism. You can say that about virtually any book.

Just got Stefan Sagmeister's Things I have learned in my Life so far in the mail. Not a novel, but still interesting. I'd recommend it to anyone here interested in graphic design.

I was a a bit wary myself because I'd heard the same but it's just one of those books that I felt I had to read eventually.

So far so good, I'm 150 pages in and it's been a very engaging read. I got used to the archaic language very soon (it's not exactly 15th century English). I'll report back once I've finished...

Also, I just ordered a bunch of dirt cheap books from the American Amazon! I lovez the dollar being so low...

Well of course, it's kind of like saying Radiohead isn't for people who don't like music, it's not something you start with. You have to like a bit reading before you dive into Melville.

Well, I've finally finished it and I have nothing but praises and superlatives for it. Absolutely fantastic read. It's so complex and multilayered, I can imagine spending an entire year dissecting it in English class. Definitely one of the best books I've ever read.
