Arthur C. Clarke, Rendezvous With Rama. A true science fiction classic from one of the veritable kings of the hard scifi genre. It involves humanity's first contact with alien life, in the form of a planet-sized, hollow cylinder hurtling through space into the sun. I just started, but it looks great so far (from Clarke, how could you expect less?).

Also, is it me, or does almost every person in this thread love fantasy? That's almost all I ever see in here.

Most people into metal on this forum are into fantasy novels, it goes with the terrain, but it does seem that lovers of other types of music are into fantasy as well.

I am reading this non fiction book about a woman who researches human trafficking, specifically women being sold to be sex slaves. It's fantastic, eye opening and sad at the same time.

Started Anne Franks diary since I finished GOT. Loving it so far, it's just really beginning to get in to it now. I've wanted to read this book for years but never got around to it.

Ironically, I only really got into metal AFTER I stopped reading most fantasy.

Ahhh but the fantasy had seeped into the subconscious part of your brain and made you more receptive to metal.

Actually, that's probably halfway true. I got into metal through Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden and the like. I'm lucky I didn't turn into a power metal fanboy!

If you like Iron Maiden and Dio, then you're a power metal fanboy in waiting. It's just a matter of time.

Nah, I kinda got over them. They're still good, but I discovered jazz and haven't looked back. Plus, there's just so much more interesting stuff going on in extreme metal, power metal bores the hell out of me.

Reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card again. Figured since they are making it a movie, may as well get it in one more time.

I've always considered Ender's Game one of the 5 greatest sci-fi novels of all-time. Masterpiece.

Hope they don't screw it up for the silver screen.

bob. 09-30-2012 01:25 PM

i would call Ender'sGame one of the top five greatest novels of all time.

they will man.....but it will be fun to complain about how bad they screw it up

Yeah, it's really great. Never tire reading it. I would throw the Foundation series by Asimov in the top 5 too, though there's like a million books in it. Nonetheless it's classic hard science fiction and legendary in sci-fi literature.

I hope not. Asa Butterfield will star as Ender. He was the kid from Hugo and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. It also will have an all-star cast including Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Abigail Breslin and more. It's going to be directed by Gavin Hood who did X-Men Origins" Wolverine.

One thing I wonder how they will deal with it is the fact a large portion of the novel is just Ender sitting in front of computer monitors running simulations. Curious as to how they will not make that monotonous in a movie version.

As of now it's slated to be released November of 2013.

The Batlord 10-01-2012 09:51 AM

Oh god no! How can you make a movie about Ender's Game? That book is almost an anti-sci fi book. All the space battles are done on simulators and most of the technology of that book goes untalked about. How can you make a "blockbuster" out of that? If they do it right though, it might be amazing. That book is definitely one of my favorite books of all time. One of those books I like to read when I'm feeling misanthropic and alienated from the human race, right along with Fight Club.

from what i understand the script is actually based off of Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow....i guess even Orson Scott Card felt that that was the only way to make a watchable film...adding that element of Bean's story

I'm reading Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist which I'm really enjoying. It doesn't take the whole dark and gritty approach to fantasy and there's a lighthearted sense of wonder that can be appreciated from all ages.

Has anybody read Jonathan Safran Foer's short story "The Primer For the Punctuation of Heart Disease", and wants to chat with me about it so I can bounce ideas around for an essay piece?

The Batlord 10-02-2012 09:19 AM

I'm in the mood for fantasy that reads like the author had a really good game of DnD and wanted to write about it. You know the kind. Has no qualms about using goblins, and elves, and wizards with cheesy magic powers. A Song of Fire and Ice is great and all, but sometimes I just need something a bit more shameless and dorky. So, I'm reading The Icewind Dale trilogy by R.A. Salvatore, and I've got the first three books of the Dragonlance series for after I finish that.

That actually sounds a lot like what I'm reading right now, Magician: Apprentice except DM-ed by a well-mannered teenage boy who just wants to have a good, fun, safe time. A Song of Fire & Ice is more like if the DM had just finished reading... I dunno some Image comic from the '90's, and by that I mean with the blood and violence, not the pouch mounted gun tits.

Thinking about giving Asimov's "Prelude to Foundation" a whirl. It's been sitting on one of my bookshelves collecting dust since 2005.

Silverthorn by Raymond E. Feist

Ended up finishing Magician: Apprentice last night and quickly put the followup on my iPad. While there were some major pacing issues towards the last 150 pages or so where years went by each chapter, I did like how they started to develop some of background characters more. It did seem a little strange though, as the main character Pug was really the only one we got to see, minus two chapters, and then he's just abandoned at the end of the second act. In either case I'm not as concerned as these books are huge and there's only three of them, but it was a little odd, and makes me wonder if that's why there's two versions of the book.

In The Presence Of My Enemies, by Gracia Burnham. Martin and Gracia Burnham were missionaries in the Philippines from 1986 to 2001, when they were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf, an Islamic extremist group. This is the account of the year of the captivity, along with many other kidnapped Filipinos. The "adventure" unfortunately ended with Martin being shot to death, so Gracia had to write the book alone.

I just started this book, and the first think I notice is that Ms. Burnham is in no way a writer. The writing style is very immature, but I can accept that. She was a missionary, not a novelist. The story does look like it will be an interesting one, as I see the various kidnappees and how they survive in the jungle with their kidnappers.

Currently reading Anne Franks diary (no idea which version) and I'm around mid 1943. They've been in the annex a while now and it's beginning to get pretty boring for me. It's kind of same ****, different day. Anyone know if it'll pick up?

@pete I will check the books I have and definitely download it if its missing. Thanks!

Rabbit, Run by John Updike

I believe he has won a Pulitzer prize for some books in this series. Kick-ass book so far.

Just finished Sophie's Choice and eee-gads was it depressing. I think the choice totally sucks.

The Brothers Neville, by... The Brothers Neville. Just started this. It looks promising. A very unique look, not just at the music of the brothers, but at the fascinating lives and culture of African Americans in Louisiana in a very, very volatile time (the brothers were all born in the 30's or 40's). It's being written in interview forum, so it's not gonna be a hard read... I probably won't be getting through it too quickly, though. It's a thick book and I have other stuff I need to do, and other books I'm slowly reading.

Across the Nightingale Floor by Lian Hearn

First book in the Tales of Otori trilogy and one of the few fantasy novels I've seen that has taken it's primary inspiration from more of a Feudal Japan era of history rather than the Medieval Europe we're mostly stuck with.
