Backlight kills batteries. I charge my Kindle every week or two.

Just finished:

Choke by Chuck Palahniuk

http://ohsonerdgasmic.files.wordpres...1/06/choke.jpg
Short read, but good. A little vague at times but it allows you to fill in the gaps at the end. A twisted story, with transparent characters. Unpredictable isn't the right word, but it's the first one that comes to mind. :)

Overall good, but not great.

7.5/10

Currently reading:

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith

I took a reminder from Dr. Seussicide's post that I still had this waiting on my kindle. After seeing the movie trailer, I figured I have to read it as a prerequisite. Liking it so far. Will report back when finsihed.

I'll be waiting to see what you think of it, I've been very tempted to read it since it came out. It's just hard to convince myself to pick it up when I have a stack of books almost as long as my forearm waiting for me.

WWWP 05-31-2012 03:27 PM

I usually am reading several things at once, but I've recently decided to narrow it down to increase my reading retention and get through books more efficiently. So far it's working out and I've been reading one work of fiction and one of nonfiction at a time.

Fiction:

Just started this. It's a collection of work from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I always read introductions to books, but this was the first book I've read where the introduction had chapters.

The intro was meaty, with a lot of good biographical info on Doyle. I have made it through the first two chapters of The Lost World, and am impressed so far. As far as I can tell, it deserves the praise it gets.

And this is my third recent 19th century sci fi/fantasy novel. I'm on a roll.

slowing making it through this series (at my own fault....stupid sunshine :) )

i have a gripe about the last book.....but the prologue alone with this one had the hairs on my neck standing....and almost made me forget about my anger......almost :)

Spoiler for not a big deal but a spoiler none the less:
and i'm glad that Davos made it through the war :).....i kind of like him

Does anyone know if the kindle has any good free books? I've borrowed one and have nothing to read.

You can read some good public domain literature, anything over...one hundred I think?...years old is free. There is a lot of great classic lit out there if you're willing to find it.

Pretty much this, old material will be free, and sometimes you will find certain books that aren't quite old enough to be public domain, but pretty damn old will be available for a few bucks. Also you can sometimes find young writers' work pretty cheap too, but there's no telling if it will be good or not. Then of course you can always pirate it, the file format you want to be looking for if you choose this route is .MOBI or .PDF.

It's not Wuthering Heights or The Scarlet Letter so I'd say you're already ahead of most people.

He's fantastic, very clever and well-spoken man. I've watched that lecture several times in hopes that it will turn me into a brilliant astrophysicist.

A Thousand Splendid Suns wasn't as good at Kite Runner, but like Pete said, as far as school reading goes it really could be worse. And Geraldine Brooks is great. It's more a matter of whether you're interested in the topic(s), I think.

I downloaded Games of Thrones on to my mums kindle. OH YEAH. Even though I don't know what it'll be like I'm super excited. :D:D:D

but just the first book incase I don't like it.

Also reading through the Ranma 1/2 graphic novels. They're my brother's, but he's letting me borrow them. Silly fun!

That's why I'm also reading Ranma. Need something to laugh at after I lay in bed all night staring at the bleak, horrible future.

I read The Road last year. It was decent. My biggest complaint about the writing style was how McCarthy didn't use quotation marks when someone was speaking, so during long scenes of dialogue I'd forget who was saying what.

PS. Apparently, I can't quote someone who has a link in their post until I have 15 posts. So.

I am completely unmotivated to read Hunger Games.
I am somewhere in the middle of the 2nd book but I just cannot push myself to read sometimes, I'm not excited about it. What was everyone so excited about? Nothing has been going on for like 100 pages now.

Finished The Road just now. Thought it was quite good, though the writing style was a bit difficult to get into at first. No quotation marks, barely any punctuation, and some rather odd sentences. And his whole sentence structure is off kilter.

That said, I love anything that is post-apocalyptic, and thought that this vision of the future was wonderfully bleak. Good story and good characterization. On to my next book.

Just out of curiosity, what Shakespeare is being taught in school besides Romeo & Juliet?

I'm about halfway through, and I still can't put it down. Really interesting stuff. This should monopolize my reading for the next few weeks/months (gonna read all of the available books).

I came across it in a pile of books I've had for ages and realized I had never read it before. Instant favorite. Perfect for a hot day. There's a lot of research that was inspired by reading it, too. Now, if I can only get my hands on Through The Looking Glass...

I live in Scotland so it might be different in other countries. For Higher English, they can teach Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth I am sure. For Higher Drama they do Twelfth Night sometimes. For Advanced Higher English they do Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, The Tempest and A Winter's Tale - as well as the sonnets!

I've been meaning to buy that. Bourdain is my kind of pompous New Yorker. I love his show, its always a great treat.

Ok...so I just finished the last Dark Tower book a few days ago. I really wanted to think about it before I posted anything anywhere or made any firm judgments.

I've heard people say that the end of this book ruined the entire series for them. Admittedly, when I got to the big closer I was thinking "Whhhaaaaaaa???!!". But the more I think about it, the more it seems like a perfect ending. It just fits. It fits Roland's personality, it makes sense of the signs and events and people's attitudes that occur throughout his quest. I thought it was a perfect Stephen King ending. Not all wrapped up nice and pretty, but still with the hope that things can turn out all right eventually.

Tears were shed along the way. Many sleepless nights were spent thinking about Jake, Susannah, Eddie, Roland, and Oy. I actually dreamed about this book three nights in a row. I would recommend it to anyone willing to go on the 7 (now 8) book journey.

In short, I love this book, ending and all. I can't wait to go back and read "The Wind Through the Keyhole" (Dark Tower 4.5). Heck, I can't wait to re-read this series. Especially the first book, which no doubt will make a million times more sense than it did the first time around.

In America it's not that different, except the books aren't decided by education levels but by the teachers. Everybody learns Romeo and Juliet and his sonnets during Freshman/Sophomore year, and the upperclassmen read the ones that you mentioned with the addition of Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and King Lear. Hamlet was definitely the highlight of my Senior year's reading assignments.

We did Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, MacBeth and The Taming of the Shrew.
