Ender's Game is in my top 5 books of all time. I haven't read any other OSC but I am in fact about to start Ender's Shadow now! Have you read it then? It's supposed to be from Bean's POV right?

yes it's basically a re-telling of Ender's Game from the point of view of Bean....with the first 1/4 or so telling the really interesting story of Bean's background!

as for the others....i don't know....his mixture of moral theology and sci-fi starts to get on my nerves a bit....speaker was ok in my eyes and Xenocide just went off the deep end.....i have to admit that i'm interested in continuing the Bean side of things....seems like the "Shadow" series could be quite interesting

Ender's Shadow is well worth the read though....i hope you enjoy it :)

The Last Templar by Raymond Khoury

Third book in a week, I'm on a tear. This one is good so far, a lot of stuff going on. I might take a little longer to get through this one.

GravitySlips 04-06-2012 09:02 AM

Just got Infinite Jest delivered - an intimidating length but I've heard good things. Gonna make a start to it as soon as I'm done with re-reading Neuromancer

This was wonderful. My favorite Batman graphic novel I've read. I'm not big on Superman or any sort of Robin, and both were present...but as a whole, it was just too damn good for this to be a problem. Joker, Harvey Dent, new villains, aging Batman, Gordon retiring...yes, yes, yes.

I also loved the artwork in this one.

Plus, Frank Miller > All.

I ordered it, but I haven't got it yet.

I really enjoyed Speaker for The Dead, it has some quotable lines and solid story telling. Xenocide has fallen short for me (he gets a bit sloppy with his writing and construction), though the sub-plot with the chinese family is very interesting.

We can build you is ****. The ending bares no relation to what's been going on during the bulk of the novel. All that happens is one character goes to a mental aslyum and the whole plotline just get's forgotten about. I've never read a book so pointless in my life before.

Men At Arms

It's been awhile since I've read anything by Terry Pratchett, but this one has always been one of my favourites. Pratchett is such a unique fantasy author and the Diskworld is one of my favourite fictional universes.

Got the advanced reader copy of this today. If you don't know, Christopher Buckley is the author of Thank You For Smoking, so I'm expecting it to be a jolly old time.

Lucky dog. I loved thank you.

I recommend it.
In love with this book.

Holy ****, I had no idea Chris Buckley wrote TYFS. Its easily one of the funniest films I've seen but I didn't know it was him.

Let me know how the book turns out.

Darkness, Take My Hand by Dennis LeHane

Follwing up on this series, book 2. Pretty engaging so far, as much as I loved the first, I can't see anything bad coming of this.

I couldn't get into the last book (for no good reason other than time/circumstance/mood) so I am reading this, I quite like it so far.

^ I still don't understand why they had to change the title of the book for American audiences.

Anyway I just read this...

http://27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l4...6r71o1_400.jpg

I thought it was going to be some pissy chick lit but it was actually really, really good. It's up there with some of my favourite books of all time, and it will take a lot to knock it off. It really affected me in a kinda profound way for some reason.

The movie was terrible, though.

Sansa Stark 04-19-2012 05:01 AM

That ending was sum bull****. Seriously I was so mad after reading it!!! Ugh I liked the movie though.

It was a huge shock, and I was pissed too at the ending... but I'm not really a fan of happily ever after lovey-dovey stuff anyway.

Because publishers here think the American public are idiots. I believe it's not just the title they changed but also certain words (i.e. replacing "torch" with "flashlight"). It's pretty silly.

Just finished The Running Man by Stephen King. It was alright. Like a book you'd read for filler while waiting for something else, which is what I'm did (waiting for my local library to get The Plague delivered). I feel as though the potential of a plot like this was wasted with King.

I think that's pretty indicative of Stephen King as a whole.

Blasphemy!!

Ok, not that bad, but really? As a whole?

Janszoon 04-22-2012 04:54 PM

I like Stephen King, but am I alone in thinking he's not very good at writing endings? It's especially true with his horror stories. I feel like they frequently have final acts that aren't up to the level of the rest of the book.

You might have a point there. I thought the endings to "Under the Dome" and "The Mist" could have use a little tweaking. In fact, the ending to the film "The Mist" was tons better than the book.

I would never say that Stephen King books were generally good "filler" material though.

A few of his books can stand on their own, but as a whole I think his writing is the very kind that's designed to be read once while you're in between books and then dropped off at a used bookstore. Go to any used bookstore in your city and count how many Stephen King books infest the shelves of the horror section, hell one of the ones where I live has actually set aside their own shelf that's just dedicated to his material. If they weren't, then why would people be so intent on getting rid of them?

I don't hate his works, in fact The Long Walk was one of the first books that really got me into psychological horror and his books can at least be relied upon to provide entertainment, but it's a fleeting kind for me. The Myst, The Long Walk, Desperation, and Misery have all managed to stay with me after reading them, but a lot of his other novels haven't. It would be foolish to say he has not had a major impact on the horror genre, he has, its just not a genre defying one that H.P. Lovecraft had

I didn't skip the Chamber of Secrets, I just forgot to put it here. I'm jetting through these. I'm already attached to the characters and don't want it to ever end.

Now I know how everyone felt when they were going to see the last film.

I know, but the last movie came out after the last book.

I'm saying it was the end altogether, almost. Like at least after people finished reading the book, the movie was still to come. So they didn't have to let go just yet. A lot of people were feeling like their childhood was over!

debaserr 04-23-2012 02:22 AM

I'm still holding out for a redo on the movies in 10+ years.

i think i was prepared for the movie....what got me was picking up my copy of the book and walking out of the store...opening the front cover and reading "this IS the final Harry Potter book".....i actually did not want to read it :(....

it may have also helped the the film was split into two :)

I haven't seen all the movies yet. I'm going to finish reading first, but I just remember a lot of people feeling so sad. Ahaha. I can imagine it now, I'm already attached to everyone.

Just finished Hammer of the gods. Not anywhere near as salacious or w/e as I'd expected. Also It says Robert Plant’s first solo tour ended each show with a ‘reggae version of Bob Marley’s Lively up yourself’. This, no doubt, would be as opposed to Bob Marley’s own heavy metal version!.
