Underoath - Reinventing Your Exit - Lyrics Meaning
Reinventing Your Exit is the first single off of the band's record titled They're Only Chasing Safety. The album was released in 2004 and has sold over 500,000 copies alone in the U.S. Underoath is a Christian band and many of their songs reflect the struggles between faith and the fight to maintain it in the midst of trials. The song focuses on the shame of drug addiction and the false promises that it gives. In the opening line the singer talks about the way drugs makes him want to hide from God. Although there is no direct mention of God Underoath openly shares their faith in interviews and during shows.
The regret of sin and falling for the lies of drug addiction and the emptiness it brings are apparent throughout the track. Spencer Chamberlin, lead singer of the band has battled drug addiction and this battle is no doubt the inspiration behind the lyrics. This was the band's first album with lead singer Spencer Chamberlin. The previous albums were all recorded with former front man Dallas Taylor. They have become Warped Tour regulars and often play with secular bands more than their Christian counterparts. The band stresses that they do not want to shove religion down people's throats but are not ashamed of being Christian.
