James Blunt - You're Beautiful - Lyrics Meaning
This track rocketed James Blunt to fame in 2005 and won him an Ivor Novello Award for airplay. The lyrics vary slightly in its many versions as the album track contains an expletive which was edited out for the radio.
On first listening, it appears to be a song about unrequited love or a love story of the "their eyes met across a crowded room" ilk but the meaning behind the lyrics has become one of the most frequently asked questions of Blunt when interviewed. He wrote it about an ex-girlfriend after he caught a glimpse of her getting onto an underground train in London. She was with a new boyfriend that he hadn't known about.
"She and I caught eyes and lived a lifetime in that moment," explains Blunt, "but didn't do anything about it and haven't seen each other since."
It must be one of the most requested songs at weddings, despite the last line, `I will never be with you,' but popularity aside, Blunt once said, "It's probably one of the least meaningful songs on the album."
The song was nominated for several Grammy awards but it also ranked 7th in Rolling Stone magazine's `Top 10 Most Annoying Songs'!
