Daughtry - No Surprise - Lyrics Meaning
No Surprise is the first single off of the band Daughtry's sophomore release Leave This Town. Front man Chris Daughtry and Nickelback lead singer Chad Kroeger wrote the song. The band first performed the song on American Idol May 6, 2009. The song is about the ups and downs of a relationship between a couple who ultimately end up separating. The song is named no surprise because the couple goes through so much turmoil such as failed jobs and financial trouble that it comes as no surprise the relationship does not last.
The protagonist of the song goes through all of the signs that have lead to the loss of love; the loving look that has disappeared, the warm embrace that no longer occurs and the favorite location that never gets visited. The lyrics continue to tell the story of a person who feels liberated to get out of the relationship as he has been anxiously waiting for the moment where he can escape.
The single debuted at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has sold over 410, 000 copies in the U.S. Their debut at number 15 marked the band's highest debut thus far.
