Adam's Song - Blink 182 - Lyrics Meaning
This sad song really comes from the heart. The lyrics were inspired by a suicide note the band read. Guitarist Tom DeLongue explained the story behind the song in an interview. "Mark read a letter someone sent him as an email, that a kid wrote before committing suicide to his parents. We kind of got together and wrote this sad, slow song. It came out sadder than we ever thought it would, which is good too. Any song that moves you is good. Some people listen to it and go, `Wow, that's a real bum-out of a song.' But it's one of those things, a story of a kid not being happy in his life, crossed with us being really lonely on our tour. At the end of it there's a better way out, there are better things to do than kill yourself."
The song is written a bit like a suicide note with the writer attempting to explain why suicide has become the best option. He's clearly aware that those left behind will never understand his actions as a message is left in the note for them not to blame themselves.
The teenager contemplating suicide feels he doesn't have anything left to live for as he just wants to spend his days alone in his room. The lyrics cleverly combine the bands feelings about their lives on the road, touring, by saying how much they also long for the days at the end of the tour when they too can just be alone in a room.
In the opening verse, the lyrics pay homage to Nirvana by making reference to a line from their track `Come as you are' - another song about suicide.
