I think you can find music burning software for around 30 or 40 dollars, but I think most computers have the ability to burn onto CDs these days. Of course, it's been awhile since I've burned anything.

Thanks, rs. I prob won't invest 30 dollars in something that I quite possibly won't understand how to use. I may just stay with what I'm doing - or try to cure myself of the kind of fetishistic need to have something physical to represent the music I'm listening to.

I generally use USB sticks. For one thing, you can get much more on the drive by using the raw files (almost all of which will be read anyway as MP3s) rather than make an "audio CD", which will turn them into files that can only be played on a CD.

However, if you really want to do CDs, there are free progams. One I use is Infracorder, also basically Windows has one built in. Simple enough: just select the files you want in Windows Explorer, copy them (ctrl c duh) and then paste into an empty explorer window. It will then ask you how you want to burn the files. Choose "to be played with a CD player", pop a CD in the tray, hit burn and off you go. As some creatures who are cute and furry and like to suddenly stand up say, simples.

Yeah, it's been 10+ years since I listened to a CD. May be closer to 15.

I used to have an old, ****ty car with a CD player which was the last CD player I owned. It gave out at some point and I replaced it with a unit that, instead of CDs, just had support for Bluetooth and USB dongles. That's also a while and a car ago now, but it did feel like a very useful upgrade at the time. It was relatively cheap too, like equivalent to 40-50 USD?

HaHa! I still have one of those (Chevy "Pop") which I am quite attached too really.

Thanks for the advice, Trollheart: simple enough for me to follow, but I can see the direction you guys are all going in: the cd will be a thing of the past pretty soon - so thanks for being too polite to say, "For God's sake grow up, you materialistic old-timer!"

Maybe I'm out of touch too, but as far as I know, if you're an audiophile, CD's are still worth having if you're ripping CDs in a FLAC format. It's still not simple to legally get FLAC copies of music legally (or stream it), to my knowledge, but I could be wrong.

I don't think this is true - depending on what you mean by 'have the ability'. Most computers/laptops these days don't even come with disc drives. Many modern vehicles don't come with CD players either.

You have to look but you can still find computers with a CD/DVD drive. I'm pretty sure you can still burn CDs through Windows Explorer, but I could be wrong there.

That's the point - it's anything but a standard anymore - at least for laptops. You're probably right about actual desktop computers (tower style) - those probably still do come with a disc drive. I've been tarnished by buying Macs - iMacs certainly don't come with disc drives.

And it's called 'File Explorer' now, not Windows Explorer. Get with the times!

You can burn CD's through Windows Media Player that comes with Windows. You just need a CD player/burner thats supported by the software. I've burned hundreds that way and I still keep finding them when I'm looking through old boxes of stuff.

Also forgot to mention to get one of these if you don't already have something.
