In a book set in London in the '60s I came across the price of a rented room per week: "thirty-five shillings*".
Given that this was the currency of my youth, I was surprised how long it took me to realise what kind of value that was. Of course British currency back then had a kind of whimsical quality to it, with units apparently chosen just for the fun of the thing: the "Guinea", at one pound and one shilling, the "Half-Crown" at two shillings and six pennies, making it one eighth of a pound. And the "Thrupenny Bit" which was equal to two penny-ha'pennies, or one eighty-fourth of a guinea: simple, once you get the hang of it. And with shillings being divided into twelve pennies, generations of British school children were obliged to learn the "Twelve Times Table" by rote repetition, the chanting of the class culminating in the triumphant "Twelve twelves are a hundred and forty-four!" - as if this were the ultimate height to which arithmatic could possibly go, as well as providing the key, the pinnacle of financial wisdom. * It's about two US dollars; laughable by today's prices.

That's nothing: in my research for my Old American West journal I came across people paying CENTS for their hotel rooms. Mind you, we're talking 1860 -1890 area, but still.
"How much for a room?" "Ah, that'll be six cents, mister." " "Oh wow. And what if ah want runnin' water with that?" "Oh that will cost yer nine cents sir." "NINE cents? Ah cayn't afferd that! What do ye reckon ah am, made o' money?"

1,399 Euro? You are shitting me! Might as well throw your money down the toilet! And what about when it becomes sentient and self-aware and tries to kill you, huh? Huh? Anyone thought of that? Talk about being caught with your pants down!

For decades, up to December 2019, we had a 60” Mitsubishi analog TV that rolled around on wheels. Hated to get rid of it because it still worked great. Once every three or four years, something minor would go out and the repair guys would tell us to keep it as long as possible because the cards in the digital ones would go out all the time and replacing them would be at least half the cost of a new TV. After remodeling the house, we decided that it was time to go with the digital. Still miss the CRT one that rarely gave us problems - we’d just turn the thing on and it would work. Can’t always say that now. Often, it’s a real pain in the ass when it comes to doing the most basic of tasks.

I never heard of a sixty-inch analogue TV! Thought they only made those somewhat outlandish sizes when TV went all digital and flatscreen. I think the biggest CRT TV I had was about maybe 24 inch? Very reliable yes for years, but one day it just died and that was my signal to move to digital (no pun intended - what pun?) since when I've had precisely two TVs, a 32-inch LG - nothing wrong with it, still working so far as I know but changed it for a bigger one, which is a 42-inch Sharp, again no problems. Neither are/were SMART TVs.
