13 Of The Oldest Pubs In London That Are Perfect For Your Next Pint

Seeking out the oldest pubs in London used to be a favorite pastime of mine when I was there. The only bit of advice I'll add to the list is that if you visit The Prospect of Whitby and you want to sit outside, you might want to avoid going there when the tide is low. The pub sits right at the river's edge and when the river is low the muddy bottom along the shore can put out quite a stench. Especially during warm summer days.

Few Links for you...I was born in South London, have worked in London so been all over London years ago now, loved it there then 60's and the pubs and clubs with bands like The Who playing within them.

Unsure what it is like today to visit, must have changed a lot anyway.
Any city you visit today I think you need to take some care ...
There will be a lot of good markets and antique type markets which are good to wander about in...
Many good shops of course and varied to the different areas. Depends what you like to do with your spare time.
Croydon my home Town has gone from ok to pretty rough..New shopping Complex built, but no shops..guess it is because they went Bankrupt..

Hope all goes well for you...Cheers Dianne.

Thanks! I used a similar thing when I was living in Paris

Yeah, I figured. I was just wandering whether someone has such a specific place to recommend

You've actually been to a Who concert in a pub/club back in the day?

That's a nice one, haven't thought of that

That's sad
I mean, it must be nice for the people living in those condos,
But for abandoned-warehouse-nightcrawlers like me, pretty unfortunate

Yeah, it was just bars and record shops that do gigs, very fun and cozy

They small-gig stuff in London is what Hemingway would call A Moving Feast, Mucha. Different pubs are good for a while, then get superseded by other places, and the same is true of the bands; brilliant guys can suddenly go off the boil * and sound mediocre six months later. I would recommend that the place to begin is the magazine: check the listings, decide on the music, and work out the places that are easy for you to reach. First place you visit: ask the people around you where else they go for music. Their tips will be worth more than anything from me.

* Sorry, but if you're heading to London, there'll be no mercy from me when it comes to idiomatic expressions in this thread!
