America's obsession with having secondary team names is stupid anyway.
I would much rather a name like Washington Football Team over something dumb like the Cleveland Browns. It's hilarious to me that nobody ever thought to just refer to them as Washington though. I laugh every time a commentator says "the Football Team."

Yeah but that's how american pro sports works... It's not just about the location an the sport it's about the merchandise, mascots etc.
It's all just an outlet for tribalism so ironically enough a name like the seminoles for example is actually pretty apt Most people don't see it on that deeper level they just see the sport... In which case you have two new York Football teams, two new York basketball teams etc. If you a new yorker what makes you pick one over the other? |

I feel like there are a lot of reasons other than one team having a different name that leads to people liking a team.
I agree with the tribalism point but doesn't that essentially just reduce it to "I cheer for team x because my father/mother/friend etc. also does?" At least in most cases I would think so. Either way I just think the team names are often corny and don't even coincide well with the area they're based in.

They were the Redskins so long that it wasn't weird at all for the announcers to say it. There's been multiple moments throughout last season where announcers mistakenly still referred to them as the Redskins or stuttered and tripped over words in a moment of awkwardness as they tried not to refer to them as the Redskins.

They should make their name the Washington Trail of Tears to piss off literally everyone.

By making fun of their ****ty name or dumb mascot or gay jerseys You gotta look on the bright side of things Asking why name teams is like asking why countries have flags or why knights and families had insignias It all goes back to the tribalism like I said. It's just an added flair. If you've ever seen a really lit college sports game you know what I'm talking about. All the colors and banners and mascots get people into a sorta mob mentality. |
