I always get **** for it but I didn't like evil dead either lol. It was sorta funny but not at all scary.
It's sorta like my mom hyped up the exorcist to me as being the scariest movie ever and I just found it kinda comical. Especially when she started using the cross as a *****. I like the shining, once again partly for nostalgic value since I saw it when I was 6. And I saw this movie more recently called hereditary which wasn't too bad. I remember the last one that actually scared me was this movie called Sinister but I watched it on shrooms so.. Edit: really? D*ldo is censored? What kinda puritanical nonsense? |

The Exorcist is a good actual movie but the horror stuff is too dated. I lol'd when the girl called the priest a ***got though.

Yeah that's basically it. I'm sure it would've been scary when it came out.
Horror based on special affects really doesn't age well. Sorta makes you think what a waste so many modern blockbusters are going to be in 20-30 years since more effort goes into cgi scenes than the actual plot. That's one of my main gripes with the whole comic book genre of movies. Like you think back to action classics like predator and terminator and they still hold up cause of the iconic casting and aesthetic, plus they had a cool plot. Even though the special affects are cheesy now they're still enjoyable. How many of the modern equivalents will hold up? |

In 20-30 years they'll all look even more like garbage than they already do. I hate cgi. Favorite horror movie is still The Innocents (and also Moon) and also ofc The House That Screamed
The Wailing is one that's been on my watchlist for a long time now. HOWEVER I can and do still appreciate "bad" horror movies, as long as they're not overly self aware about it, you know. But I will always prefer literal puppets over cgi monsters.

You should watch Dust Devil. Minimal, ie no special effects, great plot, creepy as all hell, bleak and with a surprising ending. Also not made by Hollywood, but a small independent company and shot in Nairobi Desert.

Jump scares are lame, that's true. The only kinds of horror I like are the atmospheric kind (like in Alien) or the gory kind when it becomes campy or goofy or just straight up weird (like in the amazing mermaid horror musical called the Lure)
