It wasn't his explanation. It was Kevin J. Anderson's from the Jedi Academy trilogy.

George Lucas says, in some blu-ray commentary, that ships in the Star Wars universe calculate hyperspace routes that turn around celestial objects, so if there are a lot of them in the way, they take longer routes. So the milennium falcon computer was able to calculate a very short route.
Skirting black holes sounds troublesome, though, as that would cause time dilation in normal physics and make your trip last longer.. like when they take a quick trip to the object closer to the black hole in Interstellar. From the point of view of the guy left behind on the main ship, that short trip lasts several decades. But I guess special physics for hyperspace could make up for that, perhaps that its space is not affected by gravity in the same way or something.

Lucas then just compounded the error.
It's very simple: they ****ed up. He couldn't think of some space-age or nerdy replacement for hours/days and decided to go with something cool and settled on parsecs because, well, it sounded cool. You and he and Kevin J Whatever can argue and debate it all they want: it comes down to three words: it is bollocks. Don't insult my intelligence, Georgey, by making up stories to cover your lack of research/knowledge. (And just like that, the Covid-19 thread warps into a Star Wars one!)

I felt a great disturbance in the public health, as if millions of voices suddenly coughed out in sickness and were suddenly silenced.
