Y’all can piss on me all you want but the workers don’t mind vaccinating a white dude who lives in the community and is just as broke as everyone else. They just don’t want rich ass white people jumping the line. They don’t have to make it only black people. They have to make only people who live in a neighborhood that’s predominantly black. That solves the racial disparity and the income disparity.

I know I’m gonna get blowback for this but black healthcare workers who want to treat the underserved don’t care if you’re white. They just want you to be truly among the underserved. Honestly, black nurses are the nicest people. They want to help the poor. Period. At least, I’ve never seen more kindness in a person’s eyes than the black employees at the community health. They don’t care if I’m white.

And triple mother**** a rich person who only came into a poor neighborhood once in a decade to get the vaccine. Locals only.

Don't play the misunderstood victim, I agree with this and I'd be surprised if anyone doesn't. With this virus, like with so many things, rich people are much less at risk. It's only fair to give the vaccine to vulnerable people first, and apart from age and medical conditions etc. that's poor people, so they should have priority over rich people. Unless there would be a reason that makes black or white people more vulnerable there is no reason to distinguish between skin colour.

I think the Times is kind of misrepresenting how the healthcare workers feel though.

I get that the workers only see black faces for years then when they get the vaccine there’s a million honkeys in there race is an easy way to break it down

but every time I say it’s money not race I get called a class reductionist so me expecting pushback on this isn’t unreasonable

the way the Times writes that you’d think the nurses are Nation of Islam segregationists or something

They don’t care if you’re white. They care that you’re not from the community.

I can’t speak for all of them but I never felt unwelcome as the only white or almost the only white face in a clinic

Honestly it’s more likely that black healthcare workers will bend over backwards to make sure you’re comfortable

Nah people don't cry class reductionism for the sake of it; it's only class reductionism when you're focusing on class in a way which doesn't make sense: saying 'it's money, not race' while it's actually both, or just race (or whatever else). Here it makes perfect sense. And I totally believe what you're saying about how it actually is in these communities.

Yes. That's the perfect way to make sure poor people get vaccinated first. Make them show their IDs. Call ICE to help while you're at it.

ok sure but that's not really the point
although actually now that I've taken a look at the article I'll add some nuance to my earlier point. Of course the determining factor here is probably wealth so that's why white people get vaccined disproportionately, but the fact that that has this impact on black communities is still relevant, even if money is the cause and not race. That's all they're saying I think, which is important.
But I still agree that if a distinction should be made about who gets the vaccine first they should look at money, not race

I hear about black people producing less vitamin D which makes them more susceptible but I have no idea if that's just bull**** to distract from poverty as a cause of higher death and infection rate. So race might actually be a factor.
