Thanks for that graphic, OH. Those are difficult figures, both to accept and to deny, but as you say, I can't see the US taking a significantly different route. Their test, contact-trace, isolate system wasn't effective enough when there were only 15 cases, now the genie is so out of the bottle, they'll never catch up.
I suppose an effective vaccine might change the statistics though.

Surely some confusion about the difference between (a) reducing the birth rate and (b) having people drop dead? One is to be applauded, the other, not so much.

If it's not going to happen then why bring it up? It's like Republicans saying that they'll consider giving money to the poor when pork barrel spending ends. They'll end poverty once corruption is cured essentially. In the mean time we still have overpopulation and poverty issues.

Regardless of the potential solutions to overpopulation we absolutely have issues of overpopulation that aren't being solved. I mean if the world only had 7 million people rather than 7 billion do you think we'd have global warming? Do you think we'd have widespread deforestation? Do you think we'd have pollution? Saying that population and resources are simply being mismanaged and therefore we don't have overpopulation is just a way to duck eugenic talk while avoiding the conversation.

Because large cities are environmental nightmares and other species deserve to live too

Sorry if it doesn’t fit his political agenda it can’t be true.

If that doesn’t end the conversation... it’s just like climate change deniers, covid is hoax, flat earth - whatever.

Yeah I'm not a Malthusian and obviously capitalism is the biggest boogieman, but again, if the world had a population of 7 million rather than 7 billion much of capitalism's effects on the natural world wouldn't be nearly the issues they are. The current population of the world is clearly capable of bringing immense devastation on the planet with our consumption and unless you have a plan to stop that tomorrow then overpopulation is in fact a problem. Whether or not restructuring our management of population and resources would solve that problem cold is academic unless there's a realistic solution. I'm sure the next species to go extinct won't much care about why it's going to die today or tomorrow and would be totally happy if the human population were reduced.

Lucem, you're right, it's silly to talk about what I would or wouldn't do IRL. Glad you brought it up. Maybe you should write an instrumental about it. I recommend a piano paired with a clarinet. With ambient sounds of you hanging from your shower curtain you ****ing failure.
