Florida surpassed 400,000 total coronavirus cases on Friday, one day after Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state had "clearly stabilized with the cases."

As of 9:25 a.m. ET Friday, Florida had recorded some 402,312 cases of COVID-19, according to data compiled by the state Department of Health. The state logged an average of 10,700 cases per day over the last seven days.

Yo, innocent question here because I've really taken a step back from the news coverage/numbers for mental health reasons over the last month...

Are deaths down?

I see all the new cases in Florida, Arizona, Texas, ect...

How many of those are turning into deaths? Are we getting better at treating this? You'd think half of Florida would be a corpse by now. Are they not reporting the deaths? Just seemed like in the beginning the northeast was recording hundreds of deaths a day. Doesn't seem to be the case right now or am I missing something?

Hard to say with muddled data and a lot of moving parts. Deaths are going up overall but seems to be inconsistent since there are several strains with varying symptoms (source). It also seems like many who are dying very soon after the initial infection are the elderly, those with weakened immune systems, etc, so the number of people who die months after their infection aren't apparent right now.

hospitalizations are soaring, and more than 1,100 new coronavirus deaths were reported across the United States on Wednesday, marking the first time since May 29 that the daily count exceeded that number
Washington Post

However daily death tolls peaked at about 2,700.
(US numbers)

Assuming the numbers are good like frown says

I also saw a stat that the number of deaths overall this year by any cause are way up past what the corona numbers indicate but we don’t know how these people died. I’ll have to search for that article if you care.

Yeah, looks like I was just actively missing the death reports. I guess I'll go back to being angry and sad now.

Also we haven’t seen the first generation born from pregnant covid cases. Could be nothing at all but it’s a thought. I wouldn’t want to be in a womb right now tbh

A dude in Newark or Brooklyn is more likely to die in a hospital than Appalachian folk - I figure

Medical approaches may have improved since those terrible days in NYC.
