McDonald’s Workers in Denmark Pity Us

Quote:
Starting pay for the humblest burger-flipper at McDonald’s in Denmark is about $22 an hour once various pay supplements are included. The McDonald’s workers in Denmark get six weeks of paid vacation a year, life insurance, a year’s paid maternity leave and a pension plan. And like all Danes, they enjoy universal medical insurance and paid sick leave.

One reason Denmark was more effective than the United States in responding to the crisis is that no Dane hesitated to seek treatment because of concerns about medical bills.

Abu Sayeed knew that Americans working in fast food don’t do so well. “I heard about the movement,” he said, trying to remember its name. “Fight for something. Fight for $20? What was it?”

“Fight for $15,” I explained. “They want $15 an hour.”

There was an awkward silence.

Younger people are getting sick with Covid-19. States that had brief coronavirus lockdowns are struggling to encourage social distancing and mask-wearing. Many people appear to have embraced their usual summer rituals. Health officials are sounding alarms about a surge in cases racing not through nursing homes, but bars and house parties. Hospitals are filling with medically-vulnerable elderly—but also 20-somethings and patients in their 30s and 40s.

Unfortunately this article doesn’t have any hard numbers on the age factor.

It's going to go up every day for a few weeks I'd figure.

For some reason the pattern seems to be less diagnosed cases on Sunday and Monday and then they start climbing to new heights. Probably has to do with people working until they drop.

This has been the case with NJ/NY too. Basically, the people working in the testing centers take off Sunday, get back to work Monday, Mondays work starts coming out Tuesday.

The urge to bitch slap the soul out of him would be overwhelming and certainly worth the trip to the slammer.

I'm more bothered by the little boy behind him with the Hitler Youth cut.
