The majority of masks and face coverings mitigate spread but don't protect the wearer significantly enough to consider it protective. I'm not sure how much clearer I can make it for you.

I think if somebody coughs directly in my face with my cloth mask, I'm f*cked, but if I cough with my cloth mask on, I am spreading less into the air.

It's still possible for a virus to spread from an infected mask wearer to a non-infected mask wearer, but it lowers the risk significantly enough to be worth it.
