On the topic of US guidance during Covid-19, much has been made of the mixed messages of Trump+Pence. More sinister though, has been the silent emasculation of the CDC by the Trump admin. Rachel Maddow has recently done a piece exposing the glaring difference between the pre- and post-Covid CDC. I wonder if anyone else has seen it?
Bottom Line:
For decades, in response to health problems like Legionnaire's disease the CDC has given stern instructions to industry: Do this, don't do that.
With Covid under Trump, their messages are full of "perhaps" "if possible" and "could". It sounds like, at every level, the current Federal/WH response is a hopeless muddle.
That may be part Trump and part this virus is ****ing baffling in ways we’ve never (?) seen before.

China may not have made a virus from scratch, but it certainly looks like they were tweaking the **** out of one in a lab before it got loose. It's exactly the same way The Stand started, except the bad guy here isn't the irresponsible U.S. military-industrial complex.

^ It's true that there's a lot we don't know about how covid19 affects the body, but the scientists know plenty about how a contagious respiratory virus is passed from human to human. They learned about preventitive methods during sars and mers and all those others.
What's new is that the CDC used to give out instructions. They used imperatives, without qualification: "Do this."
Now everything has an escape clause attached: "Do this if feasable."

Rachel Maddow makes it clear that the CDC has been neutered, presumably so that those meat packing plants can stay open despite health risks. They can even say they worked within CDC guidelines: " Yeah, we would've done it, but it wasn't feasable, so like CDC said, we left it...."

Yes Trump sucks. Hope he dies today per usual. But if the CDC have become cowards that’s on them.

On a recent earnings call — typically a dry review of financial results — Tesla CEO Elon Musk went off-script, calling stay-at-home orders imposed as a result of the global coronavirus pandemic "fascist."
"Give people back their goddamn freedom," Musk said, adding that the coronavirus shutdowns are taking a toll on his company's manufacturing and ability to source supplies. As Wall Street analysts and investors listened, Musk railed against the restrictions, meant to slow the virus' spread, likening them to "forcibly imprisoning people in their homes."
CNN

Guess what Elan? Broke people and poor people and people forced into exposure of this **** are already trapped virus or no virus. Sorry about your manufacturing sector. Maybe you should give your money back to the people you stole it from. And then kill yourself. K? Thanx

"All evidence so far points to the fact the COVID-19 virus is naturally derived and not man-made," explains immunologist Nigel McMillan from the Menzies Health Institute Queensland.

"If you were going to design it in a lab the sequence changes make no sense as all previous evidence would tell you it would make the virus worse. No system exists in the lab to make some of the changes found."

Back in late March, we covered a study published in Nature Medicine, in which the researchers investigated the genomic data of SARS-CoV-2 - particularly the receptor-binding domain (RBD) sections of the virus - to try and discover how it mutated into the virulent and deadly version we're currently struggling to contain.

As a by-product of their research, they were able to determine that SARS-CoV-2 was not genetically manipulated.

"By comparing the available genome sequence data for known coronavirus strains, we can firmly determine that SARS-CoV-2 originated through natural processes," one of the researchers, Scripps Research immunologist Kristian Andersen, said at the time.

"Two features of the virus, the mutations in the RBD portion of the spike protein and its distinct backbone, rules out laboratory manipulation as a potential origin for SARS-CoV-2."

Although it is clear the virus was not created in the lab, there have been ongoing concerns it may have 'escaped' a research facility, with most of the speculation - understandably - focussed on the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). However, it remains just speculation.
