Glass Top Tables vs. Wooden Top Tables

My main argument for glass top tables is that the sound of a beer bottle solidly being placed on a glass top table can not be replicated or replaced. The inherent danger in being drunk around a glass top table is obvious but overshadowed by the benefits.

Discuss.

Marble or gtfo

The Batlord 12-21-2018 02:27 PM

****ing bourgeois ****. Your face will sound the most satisfying on my table.

MicShazam 12-21-2018 02:32 PM

Two tables: Cheap chipboard TV table from Ikea. Sort of an imitation wood thing going on. Might be a really thin slice of actual wood glued on to the chipboard. It's not glamorous, but I like simple, functional furniture. Glass tables don't strike me as a very practical idea.

The other table I have is big enough for 6 chairs. Can be extended for 10 chairs. Some kind of actual wood, but not oak. Kinda dark-ish. Not sure what it is. Inhereted from my long dead grandparents.

OccultHawk 12-21-2018 02:35 PM

Glass tables are like the worst of the 80’s

Frownland 12-21-2018 02:38 PM

Fully wooden tables>>>>>>wood top tables

Not only am I partially surrounded all day here in the studio with cool looking glass tables,
but I'm also using glass coasters specially made by an artist in Osoyoos to put my drinks on.
I've used this same setup now for about 20 years. Meanwhile, the wooden-topped table in the
front room needs a fresh sanding to get rid of the scratches that have shown up over the years.

MicShazam 12-21-2018 02:47 PM

The scratches add character. Also I just don't want to pay for a new table.

rostasi 12-21-2018 02:49 PM

Not when you want to actually do some kind of writing or drawing on it.
...and I don't think we're talking about buying anything new - just preferences.

MicShazam 12-21-2018 02:51 PM

That's true. I always draw on a cardboard sheet or something, not with my paper directly on the table though. But even small scratches can mess up your pencil work for sure.

Rostasi's tidy arrangement notwithstanding, for me it's 100% wood all the way. With wood, it's not so hard to make your own table, or adapt what you have to a new location. If I can find a photo of the table I'm most proud of I'll post it.

A problem with glass tops is that, afaik, you can't nail anything on to them, or, as I have done with wood, drill through them and suspend an extra shelf underneath. The other thing I don't like about glass tops is that they're usually supported by metal frames, which again do not allow for individual adaptation. With a wooden desk , for example, you can screw hooks in the sides to hang your keys, your latex-fetish mask or er...

rostasi 12-21-2018 04:09 PM

Yeah, for treating furniture like swiss cheese,
I'll stick with wood work tables in the garage.

Carpe Mortem 12-21-2018 04:27 PM

Wooden. Especially those resin filled wooden tables, which I'm totally going to be attempting come spring. Best of both worlds.

Wooden. Glass tables leave marks and it's easy to see. Wood is easier to hide those marks.

rostasi 12-21-2018 09:55 PM

Twenty years plus of Windex and no marks on the glass.
Much of the wood ... well, let's say I bought some "pens"
the other day for filling in wood cracks in various surfaces.
Some wood surfaces will have to be sanded when I get the chance.

Sometimes plain old particle board works just fine for some things too:

I haven't been thinking of the word pretentious that way. I just thought the table looked cool because it looks like a river flowing through a landscape.

In my experience, pretension requires a low self-esteem from the beholder.

That word has been chapping your ass for years.

Frownland 12-27-2018 04:58 PM

Because I'm not frontin, I'm really that great.

MicShazam 12-27-2018 05:00 PM

Who is more pretentious: Frown or the table?

Frown's trying to say that he is the table.

He remembers being the heaviest band in the world (according to local zines), now the only way he knows how to be heavy is by eating fried chicken and gritting his teeth.

MicShazam 12-27-2018 05:13 PM

Metallica is dad metal now. That's ok. Dads need metal too.

Frownland 12-27-2018 05:17 PM

If they staple Jimmy's mouth shut and further the direction that they tried out on Lulu, I'd be down for some dad metal.

MicShazam 12-27-2018 05:19 PM

People hated the fact that Lulu sounded less like dad metal and more like weird uncle who never had any kids metal.

Frownland 12-27-2018 05:21 PM

It was dad reuniting with his now junkie crew metal.

It has pretenses of being a flat surface.

Pookbasx 12-27-2018 06:59 PM

I like the original ecology,Wooden top table is very good.

SmokeAndMirrors 01-04-2019 09:21 AM

Wood.
Although, I can definitely see why glass top is appealing. For one thing, it looks nicer. For another thing, it's a lot lighter if you move a lot.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 01-04-2019 09:31 AM

glass top because of all of those cute pictures of cats laying on them
