I'm aware of the effect of evolution and chemicals on our brain, but to use that as reasoning for a lack of free will is to separate the self/identity/soul from the body.

I don't think you're all the way there but yeah. The self does get taken out and is deemed to be an interesting emergent illusion that is required to keep performing tasks by being convinced that it has purpose and agency.
