People don't get into shouty matches with half-strangers, if they see they don't see eye to eye with someone on something, they usually walk away. Not on the internet.

This is a place meant for discussion and that usually means discussing disagreements, which is pretty different from most real life scenarios that are either more casual or business/school oriented. People don't catch the tone and tend to read disagreeing points as more aggressive than they really are, which spurs said shouty matches.

I don't think it's just misreading people's tones, I think it's also the fact that not being face to face with someone, for some reason we are less inclined to think of them as real people, persons with emotions and feelings that can get hurt. That's why normally, in real life, we walk away (also because this type of shouty match usually ends up in a fist fight, whereas there's no threat of that online, you can be as big of a dick as you want with no repercussions, and usually people take advantage of that).
