The MB Writers' Club
Just an idea. More than a few of us here consider ourselves writers, or at least write stuff, and I thought it might be nice to have a thread in which we could discuss things like technique, inspiration, work practices, methods, as well as what we're working on or have completed. It could be a place to swap ideas, give or receive advice, and just generally talk about writing.
I know we have the "What Are You Writing Now?" thread, but that's a little restricted and really a place just to post or talk about what you're actually writing. This would, I hope, be a little more freeform, and allow us to discuss other things than our current projects. I'd ask anyone who intends to participate to be polite and respectful of others; not everyone will like everyone else's style, and of course, as writers we should all be ready to take criticism, but just simply putting down the efforts of other writers should be discouraged, even if you think you're the greatest thing ever to happen to the written word. All views should be accepted and respected, and if anyone wants to post stuff they've written - or are working on - here, instead of the other thread, then there should really be nothing to stop you doing that. Non-writers are of course welcome too, but let's try to keep it friendly and generally on-topic if we can. For once in a thread of mine, I'm not setting any rules, but I would ask that we all remember those immortal words of Bill and Ted, "Be excellent to each other". |
I wish I had the time to write. I used to enjoy it a lot.
|
Journal entries are pretty much all I write these days. It's where I put most of my mental focus as well. That, and video games. But it's all the same really.

I’ve been wanting to get into writing short stories
This could motivate me |
I do a lot of writing for work. A lot of reporting on local and economic news, deep dive explainers, success stories, and financial advice. It's making it difficult to write my own stuff not only because of time but because my writing style is more ambiguous and wordy, which makes it hard to switch from one to another.
And I'm hella lazy. |

What were you even talking about?

I flat out suck at writing and have a sort of mental block when it comes to writing fiction. I did write a few short stories years back, but I quickly felt like it just wasn't really gonna be my thing. 90% of everything I wrote were meticulous descriptions of places, for some reason. Then, whenever I had to start figuring out a plot or some conversation, it died on me.

I don't actually know if that's a legit rule of grammar but it just sounds retarded

Here I sit, poop all chunky,
wondering if I should smack my monkey. If I do, it'll probably hurt; I have no balls, yet I must squirt. |
Those who write on bathroom walls,
Roll their shit in little balls. And you who read these words of wit, Eat those little balls of shit. |

I write news articles. Used to write poetry and rap lyrics, but haven't in quite sometime. I want to write a book, but it's hard to funnel all of my interests into one specific niche.
I have 90+ original articles on my website. One was even utilized by a report put out by the Russian government. Some have been featured on other websites. Made around $1,000 USD off of them so far. It would be amazing to make a living off of my writing. |

Ode To The Orgasm

I wrote this awhile back. I'm studying English now and having a blast learning about Renaissance writing, Modernism, and Colonial writing. |
I am dabbling in writing a novel, although my level of commitment to the project is dangerously low.

Trust me, if there's even a small part of you that wants to do it, then just get in there and don't stop until it's done. Set a quota if you have to, even if it's only one page a day. And no matter how bad it may seem as you're writing it, just keep going. The editing afterwards is where the story really comes together anyway, but without that first draft, rough as it may be, you ain't got ****. |
I've been writing since childhood, but have been working on the same novel for nine years as a learning experience. I've been easily distracted by other projects and struggled to be consistent, but I do intend to be published.

I’m taking a fiction writing class at the moment. If any of y’all feel up to critiqueing one of my stories, I’d happily email it to you if you PM me your email address. My first story is about a hunter who discovers he’s being hunted. It’s a played out trope, but I’m pretty happy with the execution (so to speak).

How prompt? Right now?

Sounds like a plan

how does everyone go about organizing stuff before diving into the meat
I never really did very much cuz I'm a dumb amateur but I've been definitely needing to and I really wanna get started on this new story. I'm confident in the content and have been mad brainstorming but if there's a storm in my brain it's obviously gonna cause a lot of havoc and confusion and the streets will be cluttered with broken pieces of thought. In addition to that organizing the timeline is also killing me. I figure it'd be helpful to get things down somewhere and somehow so they're at least not intermingling with non-sequitur neighbors. |
Some people don't organize and just dive in. Those are called "pantsers" (as in, flying by the seat of your pants). Others are "plotters", detailing everything in outline form by chapter before starting.
And some people fall in between. They have only a rough outline, shrug, and have faith that everything will work out once they get writing. It's up to you. What kind of person are you? Write that way. |
well, like I said I don't organize normally
but this needs it it's a highly convoluted affair |
Then organize.

the sequence of events itself isn't exactly the problem but the sequence in which the sequence is sequenced
it's nonlinear obv |
