Like I didn't know that. Most kids growing up now didn't go through that (a few gens ago) and I don't see them jumping at the bits to relearn their "old" ancestrial language. Why? Because the past was the past, f*cked as it may have been, and they grew up with this one. No ****, what you mentioned was wrong. I can't help the unfortunate acts of the past, but this is now. I think its pretty arrogant. Say you really wanted to go somewhere, maybe just for a holiday, but you don't know the local language. How would you feel if you went to that country and everyone looked down on you for not knowing their language? You got no help, no respect, no chance to enjoy their country because no one would help you find your feet. I would personally hate it. Countries may as well put a big sign up saying "No one can visit our country without knowing our national language and national anthem fluently". It just won't happen and its stupid to winge just because the country is offering a help to visitors.

Besides, it would be the countries loss if it ignored other peoples cultures.

Look, I'm not trying to continue this here. My brother works at Taco Bell, though, and on more than a few occasions some acted annoyed that he couldn't understand them. I agree Americans need to learn more languages, but I think they should be more encouraged to learn English. Americans (black, white, and non-Spanish speaking immigrants who are still perfecting English here) should not have to learn Spanish to talk to them at work or in public, given that they've had forever to learn it. Tourists are a different story. If you're gonna LIVE somewhere, it's not the same thing. I just think it's rude to the others, no matter what nation, not just America. But why is it ONLY 2 languages? I'd be pissed if I were Korean and the illegal aliens (not saying all Mexicans, just many) who didn't even plan on staying here were being treated better than those who immigrants that immigrated here on the up and up.

The point of my comment was to show that African Americans were Forcibly put into a situation where learning english was vital to there survival, so it is not an apt comparison.

Yes, and my point is to quit living in the past. Regardless of that, which WAS screwed up, today's gen of black youths (a couple removed since then and now entrenched and raised in English and American culture) weren't forced to anything and are too comfortable speaking English, to learn something Mexican immigrants grew up with. There are still serious problems with racism today, but the language has evolved to be "american" and has nothing to do with that. They should learn our language before vice versa as newcomers. I do think more Americans need to be bi/mulitlingual, but it's rude as hell for guests in ANY nation to expect the "natives" to learn theirs and not vice versa. I thought most people here wanted to quit this thread, anyways.
