A place to discuss all things related to sci-fi, supernatural or legends, or whatever you want. Anything that fits within the bracket of the title - films, TV shows, books, music, comics, plays, art, whatever. Everything from Star Trek and Buffy to anime and the poems of Coleridge or the novels of Anne Rice. If it's weird or futuristic, you can talk about and discuss it here. A one-stop shop for nerding!

Re-watched the original anime last year. Sure, it's an incomplete story, but it's still awesome.

The Batlord 07-10-2018 05:52 PM

Have you read the manga? The show had the best part of the series but was a relatively small slice of the original comic. Kinda tempted to rewatch the series myself tbh. I finally reread past the Dark Eclipse so it's about time.

MicShazam 07-10-2018 05:55 PM

No, but I've heard that it's pretty big. Haven't ever read that much manga at all tbh. I followed Dragon Ball for a number of books many, many years ago and read something silly like Oh My Godess, plus the first few Akira books. That's all. It's been all about anime otherwise, which I've got a moderate amount of experience with.

The Nikopol Trilogy should probably always be the starting point. Not his first work, but the most iconic.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....4,203,200_.jpg

Plus it should still be available in a collected volume, since it was reprinted not that long ago.

Janszoon 07-10-2018 06:01 PM

What’s that?

I think the storyline from the anime was about ten volumes of the manga and about a volume was cut from the anime for... reasons, and the manga is now at 38 volumes with #39 coming this August and no end in sight as far as I know.

Yikes. It's probably good, but I kinda like stories to not get super long like that. It's really nice when an anime series wraps itself up in 1-2 seasons. When they run on forever there tends to be a lot of filler and repetition.

The Batlord 07-10-2018 06:11 PM

Repetition certainly isn't a problem and the quality has always been pretty high but I'd say after the anime storyline that the manga was never quite as dramatically compelling as a whole, though individual storylines were always strong. If I had one real criticism of the writing it's that as Berserk went along it started taking in more and more elements of "normal" fantasy that felt a bit generic.

Just finished watching (a year late) the final (?) season of Game Of Thrones.
Jesus
****ing
Christ!

MicShazam 07-11-2018 11:58 AM

I managed to sit through the entire first season. That's 10 hours I'll never get back.

The Batlord 07-11-2018 12:09 PM

Whenever MicShazam says he doesn't like something awesome I find myself wondering which neurotic obsession caused by a repressed childhood trauma that is going unmedicated is causing him to think so wrongly this time.

grindy 07-11-2018 12:11 PM

**** GOT and lay off my bro Shazizzle.

The Batlord 07-11-2018 12:11 PM

Suck cock, off-brand Chris.

Frownland 07-11-2018 12:12 PM

I've never seen an ep or read a book, I've already dedicated enough time listening to people recommend it to me ad noxious.

The Batlord 07-11-2018 12:13 PM

And I won't waste my time getting you to watch a series you'll think is decent at best. Run along now and get out of our dork thread.

grindy 07-11-2018 12:16 PM

Horror? Yes. Sci-fi? Yes. Fantasy? Hell no.

Frownland 07-11-2018 12:17 PM

I'm here to make you dorks artful.

Just don't read "sword and sorcery dragons and elf bitches" fantasy then. It's a creatively stagnant field of literature that's been stagnant for almost as long as it's existed and has only gotten more self-indulgent since D&D corrupted our youth. The only reason to read it is if you're into escapism for the sake of escapism. (And yes, fellow fantasy dorks, I'm also talking about Game of Thrones cause it's just the emperor's new clothes in less cringy fashion.)

There is other fantasy out there though.

Yeah, and then the "good stuff" keeps playing around with and twisting the tropes. Ugly elves and huge dwarves and ****. Hi-****ing-larious.
But I was obviously being facetious, I'm sure there's some great fantasy out there, but tendentially it still gets owned by sci-fi like a little bitch.
And Clive Barker bores me. A short story or novella here and there is fine, he's really good at telling genuinely gruesome ****. But he gets tiresome fast.

The Batlord 07-11-2018 12:51 PM

I wasn't talking about fantasy that messes with tropes cause that's the same damn thing with a fresh coat of paint to convince fans and the author themselves that they're not just dealing in glorified Warhammer. There's actual fantasy that uses the supernatural in much the same way as sci fi to build a world based on concepts that are in service to the story and not just theater dressing passed down from one book to the next.

Unfortunately I'm drawing a blank at least on books whose titles I can remember since I haven't been reading fantasy in years and was reading the sword and sorcery variety for the most part. Google is also unhelpful since fantasy fans are by and large the same and I'm not sure how to narrow down the search without getting yet another "TOP 10 LIST OF THE BEST LOTR RIPOFFS!!!"

Barker's more horror though. And that's where it gets confusing, because where do you draw the line? Sure, sci-fi is sci-fi, and usually there's no argument there. Even steampunk is sci-fi. But horror and fantasy tend to meld a lot in my experience. "Interview with the Vampire" is undoubtedly horror, but with some fantasy elements. Much of Barker's stuff, I definitely agree, can straddle both genres. Brian Lumley's Necroscope series is almost all three melded.
Then there's Koontz...

Oh snap looks like there's actually gonna be a Wheel of Time TV series on Amazon. I'm fascinated and amused wondering how they'll adapt the rather... fraught gender dynamics of the series. I mean one of the main plot points is there being no male magic users cause they all go crazy and so the women magic users castrate their magic. Should be a hoot.
