You can be internally motivated and also want others to appreciate you. It's not a negative sum game.

I've pretty much done everything I've set out to do and even the stuff I haven't done I've done it. So there's really no need in trying anymore.

I think we all want to be respected, and if we're human, we probably want to/need to respect others. Maybe it's an ego thing, but hell, if you say wrote a really good game or song, wouldn't you want those around you to respect you for that?
