English verb conjugation is in flux. I hated teaching grammar because yer basically telling black kids it’s incorrect to talk like der mothers. I always said it doesn’t mean yer grammar is incorrect. It just means ders a group of pretentious jerkoffs who pretend they own the language who say it’s wrong. And der the idiots that grade yer common core bs

Our experience of teaching is sooooo different, OH.

I really like teaching grammar - but my students come to it fresh and feel a sense of achievement as they learn to express their ideas with greater precision. If you were trying to modify ingrained habits of speech, that was much less welcome, I'm sure. I suppose some uplifting talk about improving students' job prospects would've been pretty futile.

Language is simply a means to communicate and if two people can communicate then why does it matter if their syntaxes aren't a carbon copy of each other? When language becomes a means to separate races and classes then it's not the person being criticized who needs to shut the **** up.

That's a nice way to bring it to perceptual level but just imagine if an invading army of time travelers forced Americans to learn Old English cause we were all speaking the wrong English. You can't tell them that your bastardized form of English is in fact the right form of English, but it is your form of English that you use on a day to day basis to speak to your friends, family, and most people you deal with so who are a bunch of medieval *******s to tell you that you should speak to all the people in your culture how they speak to the people in their culture?

Spoiler for a good teaching moment: I once spent about 90 mins of class going through the twelve basic English tenses: uses, question structures and all. I noticed one guy spent the class furiously writing notes, and at the end of the class he came up to me, shook his notes in my face and said, "This is gold. Pure gold."
