Go Amish. They have a solid foundation, and cool haircuts and beards.

You'll never be able to run away from yourself.

Yeah but when that point is extended to say time and place don’t really matter it’s bull****. People say if you move you’ll bring your problems with you but that’s not true if the problem is where you live.

Some people might be able to make peace with any situation but a lot of suicidal prison inmates would be just fine living on a yacht.

Yes, I'm surprised too that Batlord is the member to voice such yearnings as these. Everybody with any spirit has imagined this kind of escape I suspect, but the statistics aren't very promising. After all, things did not go well for the Into The Wild guy. Basically, the hermit life is miserable, imo, even before you get sick or have an accident, at which point it turns into hell.

Communes also have a pretty high failure rate: long ago I read a compendium about American communes from about 1850 to the hippy era and every one, sad to say, succumbed to one or more of the following:-
+ economic hardship
+ leaders going off the rails and becoming abusive
+ internecine rivalries and factional disputes

Sorry to pour cold water on an idealistic scheme, but if u want my advice, I'd suggest you take a holiday in which you can at least experiment with some of the things you have in mind before making any kind of commitment. This guy, for example, did a Mondo and went on the bum in his college vacations:-

I'd probably be more suicidal on a yacht.

Did you read it or just see the movie?

He had some amazing experiences.

No offense to Batlord but I’d take Alexander Supertramp’s life any day.

Not for me. I'm a lazy ****er, have a sister who is totally dependent on me (yeah we know TH shut up about your ****in' sister!) and I'm too fond of my comforts. Plus I don't do well with manual labour. On-grid for me.

Does anyone have any insights and possibly advice on exiting society and joining a community that isn't a cult?
What would you do without your video games though?

I can understand the desire to cut down and find a way to live a simpler life. I've had the thought myself. Instead of a radical move like joinging a commune, I've just cut down on certain things in order to have a quieter, more grounded life. I don't ever watch TV at all. Don't have any channels. I don't really watch youtube videos much anymore. Most of my internet time is dedicated to music these days. And I try to spend more time reading books and comics (offline in paper form!), either in silence or with a CD on the stereo. My cellphone also has no internet connection, so I only use it for calls and a rare sms. I also rarely play video games these days.

I know it's not quite what you're talking about Batlord, but I have found that just getting rid of some mental chaff and distractions this way makes for a big difference. Whether it's connected or not, I don't know, but I'm also generally less angry, less depressed than I used to be.
