More or less a cultural difference in story telling I think.

But I can't think of any Western show (or any other show of any kind) that could ever do what Evangelion did in expressing existential despair in a way that made those ideas feel literally apocalyptic. Neon Genesis Evangelion is literally the only show that has ever made me want to die. No other show has grabbed me by the soul like Eva has and no other show means what Eva does to me no matter how well crafted it might be.
About 18 episodes in on my second viewing and while I really liked it before, it might be a top five show now.

Also rewatching The Sopranos and I'm not sure how unpopular this is, but it's up there with The Great Gatsby as one of the best meditations on the American dream out there.

Have you read The Adventures of Augie March?

The Sopranos has the most incredible writing except for dream sequences - which like everywhere else they’ve ever been tried, suck.

Interesting comparison to The Great Gatsby. This is probably a very minority opinion but I think the novel would be much better if the character, George, was far more fleshed out. Compared to the character with the sporting goods store in The Sopranos who gets wiped out by gambling debts or even the chef, Artie, - those are great relatable working class characters who suffer - better than anything in Gatsby by far. And the way the Sopranos family are really just upper middle class - it’s so ****ing brilliant.

But Augie March as a novel is flawless.

I haven't read it, I'll add it to the to do mountain.

I get where you're coming from on George, but maybe he's written like that to show Nick's superficial/elitist view of him. Been too long since I read it to say for sure.

As far as dream sequences go, Wild Strawberries nails it imo. The one in The Big Lebowski is good too because it doesn't take itself too seriously.

I’ve never seen WS

I used to dislike pre-70’s film but now I’m more into it

Good call on BL - mos def works there

Also good call on Nick as narrator pertaining to George too.

Anyway, I’m with you on The Sopranos. The writing is THAT good.

Real talk. I've never seen End of Evangelion. Just a combination of long periods of being out of work, not having internet, the movie being out of print for so long, and not wanting to watch it in **** streaming quality. It just came in the mail today as a matter of fact. I think a full rewatch is due.
