I can agree with that on principle but I'm lazy and will move to Canada.

Talking about teaching two languages when we got a large percentage that can’t even read one. The kids that will actually try to learn a foreign language should be allowed to choose. Making a big push for Spanish makes sense but not from where we’re at. The Spanish speaking kids are going to learn English anyway. But the English speakers aren’t going to learn Spanish well enough to really matter. One of the luxuries of speaking English is you really don’t need another language to communicate internationally.

We have a 99% literacy rate. Don't let the 1% control the big picture.

What defines literacy? All I gotta do is spend 30 seconds on Facebook to question the standards one has to reach to be a part of that 99%

I don't know how unpopular this opinion is but I think the US should start learning Spanish as a second language.

I think we should start learning Mandarin as a first language.

I think we should learn Cantonese in protest.

An issue I’ve found with this is that, at least where I live, Spanish is not even offered until like 8th grade at the earliest. I think that’s too late. A foreign language is required to graduate high school, but all that most people do is take the bare minimum to graduate and then forget basically everything after high school. I’m one of those people too, even. There’s quite a bit more even to my journey with foreign languages...ugh..., but the point is that it needs to be introduced at a younger age. The research overwhelmingly suggests that learning a language is easier when you start as young as possible too

The rednecks would probably be as happy at school systems teaching their six year olds Spanish as they would having them pray towards Mecca before class.

If they got over public schools teaching evolution then I'm sure they could get over public schools teaching Spanish

...or maybe I just have way too much faith in rednecks
