I think the entire notion of moral progress is antithetical to the biblical narrative. There is God's perfect moral standard and then there is the flawed and inevitable human deviations from that standard.
Each sect is going to be different but my understanding is that without praying you won't know god's will and your instinct will be to sin. But I was talking more about the origin of the idea itself rather than how it's been interpreted over the millennia.

Eh there's definitely the idea that trusting in God is a virtue because his will is better than yours, but I don't think it's portrayed as simple ignorance. Even the very first act of rebellion, biting the fruit, is portrayed as simple disobedience. Then time and time again people knowingly sin and are accordingly punished.

I couldn't still hit my mom up for money but probably cause she'd just shriek at me "You live in my house and eat my food, you ungrateful little ****" and then wipe her ass with my BK rent money and then I'd go hide in my room and get drunk.
