Yes, I also really like Frownland's house - the basic, chunky disposition of shapes, the projections over, and to the sides of, the windows, and all those clean simple lines. The latter are very difficult to achieve when you remember how a building has to incorporate all sorts of pipes, drains, gutters and cables. Not the most dramatic of architectural styles, but I've always had an inexplicable affection for those 1930s art-deco houses with curved walls. I think this style went all over the world, so maybe there's one near you.... http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/...n_2383360b.jpg.....http://www.wowhaus.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/gl1.jpg https://resources.stuff.co.nz/conten...7820608431.jpg.....http://www.wowhaus.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/26-1.jpg OK, just two more, and I promise I'll stop... https://i.pinimg.com/originals/8b/24...30e955ef37.jpg.....http://farm1.static.flickr.com/127/4...35142f3ed0.jpg |

When I'm not in school studying as a full time student or working on my music business, I'm an agency worker who's a labourer in construction... https://orig00.deviantart.net/3433/f...on-db8pk6l.jpg

Abbey Road Studios snapshot, I took this and found my p.o.v was unique, of this iconic doorway. What happened was, the people who hired me hired by Universal who owns this site put my offices and cloak room and facilitates in the car park/parking lot outside and this was captured of their front door by me for my instagram real quick on some stairs that were erected there at the time when there was construction going on. I'm rather proud of this p.o.v I took a snapshot from on my lunch break. https://pre00.deviantart.net/ea3c/th...on-db8pfvr.jpg |

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is 10,000 miles long, and Iceland is the only place on the planet where it is high enough to be above sea-level. It looks like this and is one of the great places of pilgrimage for anyone who is geology-minded I should think:- https://i.ytimg.com/vi/158UH7SsIN8/hqdefault.jpg __________________________________________________ __________ Welcome to MB, L with a G  We don't have many posters in this thread with such hands-on experience in construction, and I liked your collection of photos - especially the blurred one of Big Ben. Personally, I don't like The Gerkin, but your photos of it are very good. I've never seen a pic of it from the inside, either; surely it isn't all through the building that the external wall is seperate from the floors, as in your photo ? |
^ yep I went there too :) I should find my pics of the trip and post some

In northern Europe it's quite easy to become blasé about the gothic style of church architecture; in London, there seems to be a soot-blackened example in every high street. Nevertheless, they were fabulous buildings whose principal aesthetic goal was to inspire awe by going as high as technology permitted.
https://img-aws.ehowcdn.com/750x428p...3/92122118.jpg Notre Dame, Paris, was started in 1163 and encloses a huge high space with its cutting edge technology and elegant design. They spent 200 years on the building of it, but still didn't put the spires on the front. This is typical of the bl**dy French, who can't finish anything unless the Brits are helping them. ;) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...er_evening.jpg ^ And here is what an English spire looks like: St.Walburge's in Preston, Lancs. Though in fairness I have to mention that this is a Gothic Revival church, built in the 1860s, by which time they'd had 700 years more practice than the Notre Dame guys. Just with my thumb, it looks like the spire is three times higher than the body of the church. As was the intention, Praise the Lord! - or at least, Look heavenward and be amazed! |
Of course another design goal for the gothic cathedral builders was to give church-goers a transcendent experience through the use of stained glass:-
http://www.a-sense-of-place.com/wp-c...ned-glass2.jpg It was pretty effective too; short of going to church, it wasn't until LSD became available that adults would again whisper in wonder, "ooh look at the colours!" |
Very impressive buildings. Especially the Notre Dame, which I haven't ever seen up close. I'd very much like to.
|
Yeah, it's pretty nice, but always full of tourists, which rather detracts from the sense of wonder. I´m sure there are some quieter gothic cathedrals near you that might make for a more rewarding visit.

Not really in my own country, but there are a lot of old, beautiful churches (and beautiful little towns and villages) in Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, etc.
|
Yes, absolutely! I was once lucky enough to stay in a town right where the old East/West German wall hit the Baltic coast, so it can't be so far from you.
Lübeck, old and new:- http://www.3viajes.com/wp-content/up...1e6.jpg?x88689.....http://www.hotelanno1216.com/web/ima...ch-566x680.jpghttps://t-ec.bstatic.com/images/hote...4/44442998.jpg |
I like those spires. I might have been there once with my parents many years ago. It reminds me that I want to finally find out what that old, Danish turn of phrase is all about: "You look like death from Lübeck". Which is sort of like saying someone looks not well, or like they've just seen a ghost. What about Lübeck has something to do with death in particular. Now I want to know.

That's a curious expression. I'd be interested if you work out its origin. Where I live now they say, "The train to Peto takes me!" and as Peto is the last stop on a train before you reach difficult-to-penetrate jungle, it's pretty clear that it means, "That's too extreme to be bothering with!" For the literal-minded, here is the train at Peto, and the town's vibrant hub:-

Been in the Dudley most of the week. Of course there are more imposing English castles but I absolutely love this building, Dudley Castle, it is one thousand years old and sits atop a hill overlooking the town, the Black Country is such a beautiful and charming part of the country as well imo. Really has the old English feel. I like it a lot.

It would be really good if we could get some contributions from guys who will know some gems in their countries. Trollheart, Zaqarbal, Grindy and Isbjorn I'm guessing will have a few. Also would like some South American and Oz/Kiwi builds.
 |
Some nice stuff from where I live.
Town goes back to at least 777, so there's lots of cool old buildigs. http://www.hotelbuchwald.de/images/startseite/03big.jpg http://www.nina-travels.com/wp-conte...ny-travel4.jpg https://militaryingermany.com/wp-con...line-view1.jpg http://www.urstoeger.de/Fotos-Bilder...en08-07-60.jpg http://ais.bz-ticket.de/piece/07/bf/...-3_2-w-932.jpg https://www.esslinger-zeitung.de/cms...01121st01a.jpg |
Is that in Germany?
Some lovely stuff there. I like those old style German village type buildings. #2 and #3 look very German. |
Swarthmore College.. I love this place, the architecture and statues are wonderful, and the entire campus is a giant arboretum.

In response to your request, MLM, I have to admit I'm not a fan of architecture, so I couldn't tell you what good or bad buildings we have here. A quick search on Google isn't much help either. There's the eyesore that is Liberty Hall... (Also showing the Custom House to the right)

Cheers TH. I just asked because I remember you talking about the Angel of the North, Tower Bridge and the Palace of Westminster in that landmark thread where the Grand Canyon was very popular.
Thought you'd be the guy to show us some of Dublin's architectural big hitters  An obvious one for me is the Aviva Stadium which I love. https://essma.eu/member/images/membe...ery/aviva2.jpg http://www.rugbygroundguide.com/imag...ey/avivaop.JPG I'm guessing this was intentional. Croke Park is the same. |

Don't ask the Irish about architecture, at least in this century. Look at this monstrosity that's in the centre of our main street.

Also, get your eyes checked: it's right in the middle of the picture. They call it the Spire. We call it Bertie's Finger (Bertie Ahern being our Taoiseach/PM at the time...) Edit: I never noticed it at the time, but the way the picture is framed it's like Daniel O'Connell is saying "Look at this! Look what they did! I helped free Ireland, and they put this ****ing huge ***** up in front of me!" |
