The first time I had to - well, do something for her which nobody should expect to do until that person reaches a certain infirm age, if ya catch my drift - I was so tense about it. I remember being outside waiting to "clean up" and breathing hard, thinking "**** it man, you can do this! She needs you. There IS nobody else." This was long before we had carers and I had to dress, wash and do everything else for her. Solution? I started making a joke out of it, she started laughing, we turned it into, not an enjoyable process but certainly an endurable one. She didn't feel embarrassed, didn't feel like she was being a burden to me, and consequently neither of us ever feared or dreaded the occasion ever again. Which was just as well, as naturally it became a daily occurrence, and something we just ended up folding into what became our normal life.
